Apprenticeships

Frequently Asked Questions - Apprenticeships:

What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship offers you the chance to gain new qualifications, prove your competence and develop your skills whilst in paid employment. You don’t need to take time out to complete lengthy, classroom based courses; your work is assessed in your workplace and based on the requirements of your job role. Each Apprenticeship programme is tailored to your unique needs and the requirements of your employer, so there is no time wasted learning things that don’t apply to you.

You will gain a nationally recognised qualification to prove your competence against specific industry standards and you may have the opportunity to complete other specialist qualifications during the course of your study. Doing an Apprenticeship requires commitment, drive and an ability to use your initiative. You must be in paid employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week (or confident of securing suitable employment) and be aged 16 or over.

There are no set qualification entry requirements; each apprenticeship is different and will require a different set of skills and abilities, and with over 180 different types of Apprenticeship, there is bound to be one that suits you.

I'm already employed – can I be an apprentice?

Yes. The Apprenticeship programme can be accessed by anyone aged 16 or over, you simply need to be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week and have permission from your employer.

Will completing an Apprenticeship affect my salary?

No. The minimum wage for apprentices is currently £2.50 per hour, if you are already employed you will usually continue on your current salary and employment terms. Many employers will increase salary scales in line with your increased skills and ability.

What do I get out of it?

You will earn a nationally recognised qualification which proves your competence against specific industry standards as well as brushing up on your English, Maths and ICT skills.

You will also enjoy the ability to work as you study, with your programme designed specifically to meet your needs and your assessments and training fitted around your work commitments.

The Apprenticeship programme is designed to enhance your transferable skills and help you achieve your employment goals. Whether that means fulfilling your potential in your current role, achieving the qualifications you need to be eligible for promotion, developing skills that will take you to the next level within your organisation, or enabling you to explore new employment opportunities or progress on to university.

Your progress is in your hands, you decide how fast you get through the work and gather the evidence. You are in control of your own learning and can work at your own pace, with the help and support of an experienced occupationally competent Assessor who is available in person, on the phone and by e-mail to help you succeed.
