How to Find an Employer
Work, Earn & Learn
The basis of an apprenticeship programme is that you must be employed. Below are some ideas on how to find an employer and prepare for an interview.
- Make sure that you have an up to date CV – your Connexions PA will be able to help you with this.
- Your Record of Achievement should be up to date.
- Make a list of suitable Employers from the Yellow Pages.
- Organise a covering letter to post out; your Connexions PA will be able to help you with this.
- A week after you have posted your letter and CV, follow it up with a phone call. Employers are busy and sometimes need reminding about replying to you.
- Visit your local Connexions office. They will have all the up to date news on job vacancies and can arrange interviews for you. Connexions also have access to jobs advertised on the internet.
- Make sure that you attend any careers events in your local area.
- Check out the jobs vacancy pages in all your local newspapers on a weekly basis, outline the ones that interest you and contact them by telephone or by letter.
- Collect a copy of the Jobs 4 U booklet from your Connexions office.
- Call in person (with a smile on your face) to employers of your choice, and leave your details, ask for an interview, employers like you to show initiative.
- If you enjoyed your work placement and it was relevant to your chosen career, go back and see them and ask if there are any permanent positions, or if you can work voluntarily to gain more experience.
- Call in to Student Services, at LMC and check out the jobs board.
- Employers like enthusiasm and eagerness, show them that you have determination and a willingness to learn.
- Do not get despondent, and don’t take a rejection personally.
- Remember there are lots of other young people out there looking for Employers so that they can start the Apprentice programme of their choice.
