Community Sports Projects
Primary School links
The College runs a Primary School coaching programme that involves local Year 5 and 6 pupils coming to College after school to be coached in a variety of sports. The sessions are supervised by our staff and lead by LMC students who are working toward coaching modules.
We run a Primary School Athletics League throughout the year which involves 16 schools competing in various indoor athletics events. Several children from these meetings were selected to compete for Lancashire in the inter – counties competitions therefore providing opportunities for progression in this sport. LMC students act as assistants at these events
The Faculty regularly organises and hosts inter school competitions including the Football tournaments and the Cross country competition. Again LMC students organise these events as part of their studies.
Secondary School links
We run a Secondary School Athletics league involving Year 7 pupils from a number of local schools.
We have a partnership with Central Lancaster High School which involves pupils from the school who are undertaking the FD Outdoor Studies course accessing our facilities for various activities including fitness testing, practical sport. There is collaboration with regard to the curriculum for these pupils.
CYQ Fitness qualifications
We are now offering both Level 1 and 2 Fitness instructor courses at the College. These qualifications are a passport into working in the fitness industry and vocationally recognised by employers in this sector. Students from the local Community have recently passed Level1 and some are now progressing to the Level 2 course.
FA Football Coaching Courses
We have a franchise agreement with Lancashire FA to run FA Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certificates. There are a number of courses offered across the academic year, all lead by highly qualified FA staff. These courses are the first step onto the coaching ladder and many local football clubs have used these courses to gain qualification for their volunteer/employed coaches.
Rebound Therapy Courses
These courses involve the use of the trampoline in order to simulate a range of sensory and kinaesthetic movements and awareness for students who experience physical and sensory disabilities. Students progress in terms of balance, support and flexibility and indeed in the fact that they have manipulated movement outside the confines of the wheelchair.
Two centres are at present taking advantage of this course which is not available any where else in the community. Riverview and Thorpe view centre and Bleasedale School will undertake 10 week courses over the academic year
The sessions will take place at a brand new state of the art Trampoline centre in Morecambe which is owned and run by Martin Shenton , the only locally qualified Rebound Therapy Tutor.
Start Sport Leadership / Start Healthy Lifestyle
We are able to offer the above courses as an introduction to Sport Leadership and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The courses can be delivered to a discreet group off campus or can be held at College. The course lasts for 20 hours and can be offered over 10 weeks for 2 hours or as other options. Organisations that have undertaken these courses in the past include Skerton Family Centre, Inward House, and an Asian Women's group.
