FE Bursary Scheme - Army
Planning to join the army?
If you’re aged 16-32 and will be studying a relevant course, you may be entitled to join the FE Bursary Scheme and receive up to £4,000 .
The British Army has developed a new initiative called the Further Education Bursary Scheme which aims to help young adults aged 16-32 prepare for a career in the Army and improve the educational quality of recruits. The Bursary is worth up to £4,000 and can be accessed by students studying a variety of vocational subjects including:
- Administration
- Animal Care
- Business Management
- Construction & Engineering
- Health and Social Care
- Hospitality and Catering
- ICT for Users
- ICT Practitioners
- Media and Communication
- Music
- Public Services
- Sport
The scheme is focused on those working towards full level 2 qualifications, though there are a limited number of places available for those working towards level 3. Please discuss the suitability of your course for this scheme with your tutor.
If your application to join the scheme is successful, you’ll receive £1,000 for each year of your studies (maximum 3 years), subject to achievement and attendance, and a further £1,000 when you finish your Army basic training. As a member of the scheme, you will benefit from a personal mentor from the Army and work experience opportunities, including a residential visit to learn teamwork and leadership skills with the Army. You will meet regularly with other members of the scheme at college and complete additional activities with this group.
Once you have completed your studies, you will be able to apply for Army basic training, or defer your entry into the Army and pursue higher level qualifications. Provided your studies lead to a career in the Army, you will not be asked to repay the bursary. Should you decide not to join the Army, you will be asked to repay any money you have received from the scheme.
To apply for the Army FE Bursary scheme, please discuss your intentions with your course tutor, then contact your local Army Careers Information Office, or collect an application form from Student Services. You will be invited to an interview and will need to undertake a short fitness test. The Army will then inform you if you have been successful and make arrangements for you to become a member of the scheme.
