LMC Festival
Music Festival at LMC
Greg James, Radio 1 DJ, entertained the crowds at the LMC Festival on Friday 26th September. Over 1,000 students and staff enjoyed a range of entertainment at the biggest event of the year.
The LMC Students’ Union Festival was a first for the college and a huge success. The sun shone all afternoon as bands, solo artists, caricaturists, face painters, circus acts, and magicians entertained the crowds.
Greg James was a huge hit with both students and staff. His down-to-earth and friendly personality, along with a great range of music, meant he was surrounded by people eager for his autograph and picture. Greg played for two hours both inside the Hexagon and on the grass outside, at one point videoing a table being levitated by college magician, Dave Wilson – something which will be on Radio 1s website shortly.
The quality of the further eleven acts performing across the college was remarkable. These included Seaside Riot, Heroes of She, One Chip Potato, Ruby in the Dust, I-Beat, Shannakey, David Hanmer, Mr Nice, Off the Rails, A Day in the Life and Idol Minds.
The additional entertainment provided on the day and the range of stalls also proved very popular. Chris Murphy, a caricaturist from Arnside, and Stephanie Buick from TigerTiger Faces were surrounded by students all afternoon. Astral Circus wowed crowds with fire eating, knife juggling and a 9-foot flamingo, and Dave Wilson and Psycho Kev pulled on daredevil tricks such as walking over broken glass.
Many community organisations and local companies attended the event including Velo-city, Community Fire Safety, Animal Care, Craft Aid, Pass on Plastics. Also at the event were Juicafe, Dr Bike, Hua Xian Chinese Society, Alison Basaj Photographer, Nuts and Snacks, Sunset Ices, as well as LMC and Students’ Union stalls such as RAPID Paintball Club.
The amount of student involvement from the planning stages through to the evaluating the event has been incredible. IB students helped set up the event, welcomed external organisations and organised student evaluations on the day. Becky and Sinead from the IB Theatre group performed fantastic dance routines in the Bistro as ‘I-Beat’ and the IB students will also be putting together a Festival Mag. Students from the Paintball Club volunteered to help set up from 7.30am and ran a stall promoting their student run club – RAPID. Art Diploma students made handmade bunting; Film students filmed the event and conducted a range of interviews; Andy Willis took photos of the event; students ran the announcements; and many students performed on the main stages. Many thanks to all students, staff, acts and community groups for their support and enthusiasm.
