War Memorial Restored

War Memorial Restored

War memorial

A site of significant historical importance has been fully restored thanks to the Lancaster Military Heritage Group, The War Memorials Trust, Lancashire County Councillor Albert Thornton, Lancaster City Council and our own Estates Team!

The Morecambe Road Commemorative Marker, which was erected to honour the men from Lancaster and Morecambe who constructed Morecambe Road and also fought in the First World War, has now been fully restored and the stolen bronze plaque has been replaced.

Thanks also go to Hanson’s Aggregates, who completed all the ground works and supplied and installed the railings on a pro-bono basis, significantly reducing the overall cost of the project.

The Lancaster Military Heritage Group (LMHG) will also continue campaigning.

We have not as yet succeeded in persuading the local council to support the move of the bus stop, which resides directly in front of the memorial, and hope that one day common sense will prevail and the dignity of the location be restored when the bus stop is relocated.

LMHG carried out a Millennium War Memorial project, and have details of all the men and women (2,700 plus) named on the war memorials in the Lancaster and Morecambe area. These are all commemorated in Parish Books of Honour with a separate entry for each person, many with photographs. As we approach the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice, LMHG would be happy to provide copies of the Book of Honour entries to readers. For those interested a copy can be obtained from the contact below. Post and packing will cost £0.50, and LMHG would ask recipients to make a donation to the Help for Heroes appeal – this fund assists servicemen injured in the current conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Please send your request, along with the name of the soldier and war memorial (if possible) and a cheque made payable to ‘LMHG Help for Heroes Appeal’ to:

BOH Detail, 2 Town End, Bolton Le Sands, Carnforth, Lancashire LA5 8JF.
