Serbian Visit to LMC

LMC is half way through a two year project funded by the British Council Skills@Work fund working with a Tourism and Vocational college in Serbia. LMC is helping staff at the Serbian college to improve employer links, update the curriculum and embed quality procedures. More details

Cheque This Out

The coffee drinkers

CIS/Exams and Finance raised £104 in a combined Macmillan coffee morning on 25/9/09 and cake bake competition in August which was won by Teresa (CIS).
All proceed were donated to Macmillan.


Sustainable skills at LMC

Czech IT Out

Two LMC students visited Jablonec in the Czech Republic for 3 weeks’ work experience this summer, funded by the Leonardo project.

Alex Drive and John Beshir, both students on the BTEC National Diploma IT Practitioners, worked on live projects in local companies. More details

While the majority of you were all enjoying your summer holidays, the Sports Centre was a hive of activity with their summer holiday activities.

Along with all the daily sporting fun for the children the sports staff also took weekly visits to various fun places throughout the region. More details

Mature Students Gain Access to University

Students completing Access courses at Lancaster & Morecambe College are celebrating today (Friday 31/07/09) as they collect the results that will allow them to go on to university!

Successful students celebrating their results included Helen Anderson who studied Psychology and Sociology and will now go on to study Social Work at Lancaster University. More details


Victory at Learner Voice Awards

Staff at Lancaster & Morecambe College (LMC) are celebrating a double win at the Learning & Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) national ‘Leading the Learner Voice’ Awards. The college won through in two categories being named runner-up for ‘Most Improved Provider’ and outright winner of ‘Student Liaison Officer (SLO) of the Year’.

The Learner Voice awards recognise, reward and celebrate innovation, effort and action and the achievements made by individuals and organisations in embedding the learner voice. The Awards have proved to be a respected symbol of excellence attracting a huge number of nominations from across the FE and skills sector. Outstanding nursery

Treetops Nursery at Lancaster & Morecambe College has been graded OUTSTANDING by Ofsted.

The official report from inspectors stated that:
The nursery offers a wonderful, stimulating and industrious learning environment for all children.

Treetops is based on the Lancaster & Morecambe College site and welcomes children aged 2 - 4.The nursery is open to the general public as well as providing on-site childcare for children of LMC staff and students. More details

Each acorn planted has the potential to grow into a mighty oak tree which can live for many hundreds of years, provide shelter and a home for numerous animals insects and plants. So when students from LMC have been growing and planting oak trees then it can be truly said that they have been investing in the future. More details


LMC Student is Named Young Student of the Year at IMI Awards

16 year old Adam Rudrum has been named Young Student of the Year at the annual Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) awards. This prestigious event, which is held in the presence of HRH Prince Michael of Kent and sponsored by Lloyds TSB Autolease, celebrates the achievements of students and staff from IMI Awards approved centres.

Adam, who is completing a Young Apprenticeship at Lancaster Training Services (LTS) in partnership with Lancaster & Morecambe College, was nominated for the IMI award by Lee Lawson of LTS. More details

BAE Managers Graduate as Executive Managers

Lancaster & Morecambe College has been instrumental in the development of the management team at BAE Submarine Solutions thanks to a continued partnership that has seen LMC deliver a Chartered Management Institute Masters Level Executive Diploma in Management and Graduate Level Diploma in Leadership and Management at the Barrow site. Top European Award for LMC

Top European Award for LMC

Lancaster & Morecambe College are the only FE College to have been awarded a Leonardo da Vinci (LdV) Mobility Award at the recent ‘Creativity & Innovation in Learning’ Conference in Birmingham. This national conference showcases creativity and innovation in projects funded by EU money.

30 organisations from across the UK were selected by the funding body to apply for an award, with only 4 being deemed worthy of receiving a prize. More details


Routes into Theatre

Routes into Theatre

Children of Romany Travelling Families have created a stage set for a new performance at The Dukes Theatre which will take place this month.

The project, delivered by Lancaster District Young People’s Service in partnership with Lancaster and Morecambe College, enabled the children aged 11-16 to learn new skills in carpentry and joinery and work as a team to produce the end result – a beautifully crafted Caravan which will be used in ‘Routes’. Decontamination Exercise at LMC

Public Service and Sport students helped Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service test out their Decontamination drills and equipment in May.

20 Fire fighters and 4 appliances turned out at the College where they acted as if a device containing either a biological agent (flu / anthrax / smallpox) or a radioactive powder had been released. More details

A brand new recording studio has been created in LMC's Hexagon Theatre.

This exciting new development will allow students studying Music to create professional quality digital recordings, and also give them the experience in sound engineering and editing techniques required to succeed in this competitive industry. More details


Bike to College Day

Bike to College Day

World and European champions Ben Slinger and Danny Butler wowed crowds at Lancaster and Morecambe College with their exciting and novel mountain bike display for Bike to College Day.

Ben Slinger comes from Lancaster and became both Junior 20" and 26" World Champion, that's two competitions on two different sized bikes in the same day – he’s the first person ever to do this from the UK. More details

Birds of Prey - Fly on High

Birds of Prey

Eagles, Cara Caras, Owls and Vultures were all seen flying over the LMC grounds onto nearby lamp posts and woodland on Wednesday 20th May!

Ben Potter from Birds of Prey Displays concentrates on the natural behaviour of these magnificent birds and has a strong conservation focus, with many of the birds being rescued from places of neglect, where they had often been unable to fly. More details

Over 60 students were recognised at the annual LMC Volunteer Awards for their valuable contributions to the local community and Students’ Union.

The LMC Volunteer Awards took place on Thursday 21st May and recognised volunteers who had given their time to volunteer for organisations in the local community as well as for the LMC Students’ Union. More details

Sabotage, the Students’ Union live music night was back for its second time this year on 16th May with headliners The Troubadours, fresh from supporting the legendary Paul Weller.

Over 280 students and young people from across the district attended and the event was a huge success. More details


National Open College Network (NOCN) Outstanding Achievement Award

Darren Bailey, age 32, had a difficult past and found it hard to get stability in his life until he decided to learn some basic skills. Now, two years later, he has gained 15 qualifications and has found a job that he enjoys as an IT Network Officer at Lancaster and Morecambe College. More details

On the day the Government announced proposals to reduce the speed limits on rural roads, over 650 LMC students witnessed the harsh reality and horrific aftermath of a “real life” country road smash. More details

Safety Demonstration

E2E students met local firemen who showed a hard-hitting film detailing the effects of driving stolen vehicles at speed. The infra-red camera footage taken by police helicopter during an actual police chase in Blackpool showed an innocent boy who was hit by a car as thieves fled from police. Following the film, students learnt more about safety and the role firemen carry out when they explored a fire engine, and even got to try on the safety gear.

Seaside Riot, rarely seen playing outside Manchester these days, are coming home for a one-off headline performance for the event, staged at LMC’s own music venue, ‘The Hexagon’. Supporting are local favourites, ‘Idol Minds’, crowd pleasers, ‘A Day in the Life’ and ‘Article 48’ alongside up and coming, new band ‘Liar Liar’. Event review


Russians Benefit from College Sport Expertise

LMC Students sign up to the V-Involved volunteer project with Beth Wadsworth from Lancashire Sport

Students studying the National Diploma in Sport and Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at Lancaster & Morecambe College have signed up to the V-involved Volunteering project with Lancashire Sport and Sport England. The V project supports young people to make a difference in their local community through volunteering, and offers awards at various levels including V50 – 50 volunteering hours and V Impact – 150 hours of volunteer work.
