Money for LiFE
Lancaster & Morecambe College celebrated national Money Week with a campaign to help students learn to handle their money effectively.
Money Week is a National Skills Academy Financial Services (NSAFS) project at Lancaster & Morecambe College which forms part of the Money for LiFE initiative, the further education project of the FSA’s National Strategy for Financial Capability. The campaign is a nationwide initiative will where Further Education students of all ages and from all walks of life learn skills such as budgeting and get information on topics including understanding credit and debit cards and bank accounts and the financial help available for Further and Higher Education.
To launch Money for LiFE, a Money Fair was held in College on Wednesday 10th March with exhibitors including LMC Student Services, the Inland Revenue, Yorkshire Building Society and Treetops Nursery. Lancashire Student Services carried out workshops for students due to progress to university about student finance and NatWest Bank delivered a Money Sense workshop to over 100 students.
Elaine Wilson from Citizen’s Advice Bureau said “I think the students have been surprised by the range of services we offer. Some of them thought we just dealt with debt, but we’ve also been telling them about other issues such as benefits and housing.”
The Money for LiFE campaign will continue with workshops delivered in college to student tutor groups over the next two months to over 300 students.
Sylvia Perrins, CEO, National Skills Academy Financial Services said: “The ongoing challenges in our current economic climate serve as a poignant reminder that the financial decisions we make, personally and nationally, are of utmost importance. Personal finance is a key skill which we believe should be taught from a young age to assist, maintain and strengthen the development of our financial services industry.”
