BBC My Story

Everybody has a story to tell

Eight LMC Adult Literacy students have recently had their work published by the BBC as part of My Story.

This was a competition which gave adult learners the opportunity to tell their story as we believe that everybody has ‘a story to tell’.  The students who had their stories published were Tammy Bennell, Nick Selby, John Yates, Joanne Oughton, Julie Maltby, Deborah Sladen, Kathleen  Osbaldeston and David Phillips.
LMC tutor Susan Bramley saw this the ideal opportunity for students in the adult literacy workshops to express themselves in their own individual way. The  rules of the competition stated that the entrant had to be aged over 18 years.  There were various categories to choose from e.g. achievement, tragedy, bravery, discovery, romance, celebration. The story had to be between 300 and 1500 words and must be original and true to their own lives.

In order to complete their story each student wrote draft copies, proof read their stories for punctuation and spelling errors, and used writing scaffolds. When they were happy with their final copy , they submitted their story online to the BBC before the closing date along with a summary and key words to attract and engage the reader.

Susan Bramley said “This was a new and exciting initiative that certainly engaged my learners and they are all proud of their work.”
