Outdoor Play Area
Challenging and Exciting
Treetops Nursery recently held the opening of its new outdoor play area. The area was officially opened by Cynthia MacPherson, a former tutor at LMC who was instrumental in founding the first nursery on the college site. The opening was attended by members of LMC staff and governors and staff from Cedar Hill Landscapes who worked with the LMC staff team to complete the area.
The challenging and exciting outdoor play area was funded by a £20,000 grant from Lancashire County Council. It gives the children the choice of learning environment that suits their own individual learning styles. Chris Hodgson from Cedar Hills Landscapes said “I used natural play areas in Holland, Denmark and Sweden as inspiration for the play area. All the features are multi use, as the children climb and jump on and off the equipment, it gets them thinking and learning.
Nursery Manager Mary Tinsley welcomed Cynthia MacPherson to the event, and spoke of how inspirational Cynthia had been to her in her career. Mary thanked Julie Wilkinson, Helen Deacon, LMC Governors and SMT for their support. Mary then thanked Phil Holden and the Estates team, with a special mention for Andy the joiner and his creative work. Mary concluded “Our goal at Treetops was to provide a challenging outside area that would awaken children’s innate sense of adventure and imagination. I am sure you will agree that this goal has been reached.”
After unveiling the plaque and cutting a ribbon to declare the play area officially open, Cynthia MacPherson said “This area demonstrates everything my philosophy believes in. It offers the children challenges and risk taking opportunities. They socialise in a supported environment and will develop much better with this facility than they would without it. When they come in from play they will be relaxed and calm and ready to do the next activity.”
