A Guide to the Local Area

Lancaster

Lancaster is situated on the north west coast of England approximately 60 miles north of Manchester and is a thriving historic city which dates back to AD 79 when the Romans built a fortress, later the site of Lancaster Castle, to overlook the River Lune estuary. Along with the surrounding towns and villages the city is today home to around 135,000 people and contains a range of elegant Georgian buildings, old industrial mills, and the Victorian marble folly, Ashton Memorial, sitting high above the city in Williamson Park.

Lancaster boasts an excellent shopping centre based around pedestrianized streets and featuring most famous high street names. A cinema and other leisure facilities including The Dukes Theatre, Folly Art gallery and The Lancaster City Museum offer a wide range of entertainment while the city centre has a busy nightlife with a large number of well known bars and clubs.

Morecambe

Morecambe is situated approximately 1 mile from the College and 4 miles from Lancaster city centre and features a huge sandy bay with the backdrop of the Lake District and Bowland Fells. After a period of decline in the 70s – 90s, Morecambe’s fortunes are on the up again with the recent remodeling of the promenade and new developments in the town centre.

The now famous Eric Morecambe statue, unveiled by the Queen in 1999 has become a popular tourist attraction, while the abundant bird life and diverse marine habitats also make the Bay one of the most important wildlife sites in Europe. Like Lancaster, leisure facilities in Morecambe are good with a large bowling alley and cinema located in a new retail park development and the live music venue, The Platform, developed from a disused railway station.

Surrounding Areas

To the south of Morecambe is the historic village of Heysham, famous for containing an ancient chapel and Viking graves. It is now dominated by two nearby nuclear power stations and the Port of Heysham, which brings cargo and passengers to and from Belfast, Eire and the Isle of Man.

Lancaster and Morecambe College is approximately 25 miles from the Lake District National Park. Some staff live in and travel to work from towns such as Kendal, while others regularly make use of the beautiful national trust parkland in the Lakes through walking or outdoor sports.
