Students’ Union - The Journey So Far
We’ve come a long way
The Students’ Union is now in its second year of having full-time staff support and a set budget for students to run activities for the student body. With students involved last year returning this term and with a summer of planning and preparation the numbers of opportunities and involvement has soared, activities so far include the following:
The LMC Festival was a great success. College staff, students and the local community came together for the first LMC Festival incorporating entertainment, music and stalls – the Visitor reported that the college transformed ‘itself into a kind of Glastonbury’ and dedicated a double page spread to the event. Out of 100% of students surveyed 74% rated the event ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ and 22% rated the event as ‘good’.
The LMC Paintball Club ran a successful trip to Warton Paintball Site with 20 students participating from across the college. Quote from Matty Newham, Paintball Club President (Plumbing student) I am very grateful that we have a Students’ Union as I would not have had the chance to do this. The experience has been great. Thank you to the Students’ Union for all their help.’
Two students, Matty Newsham and Roisin Brennan attended the Special Council Event -at the Town Hall and represented young people in the district. They participated in a range of discussion groups and expressed their opinions to councillors - about the local area and the Lancashire Children and Young People’s Charter. They both commented that the event was really worthwhile and as a result Matty is continuing to work with the Council to improve services for young people.
Two students attended the NUS Media Conference in London on to develop their journalistic skills and knowledge about student media. Over 10 students have now expressed interest in developing a student magazine. Also three students attended the NUS LGBT Training Day to develop their knowledge about LGBT campaigns and to network with students promoting equality and student welfare. The students have so far had 3 planning meetings and will be running stalls for Staying Safe Week and Equality and Diversity Day.
Gemma Wilkinson, Access student attended the People and Planet Conference. She attended sessions on Gorilla Gardening and will be soon meeting with Claire Drury from LESS (Local and Effective Sustainable Solutions) to discuss promoting local food. Roisin Brennan, Art and Design student put together an LMC Fairtrade Directory.
Seven students have been elected Students’ Union Officers: President – Danelle Marriott – Access student, Communications Officer – David Parada – IT Practitioners student, Equality and Diversity Officer – Kerry Nicholas – Retail Operations student, Events Officer – David Murdoch – Public Services student, Sports Officer – Rebecca Smith – Sports student, HELP Officer – Ellen Cross – Art and Design student, Finance Officer – Stephen Taylor – Vocational Studies student.
Film and TV students are currently working with student volunteers to put together a Promotional Film for the Students’ Union to be launched in the Summer Term for Welcome Week.
