Sustainable Development Policy
At Lancaster and Morecambe College we are committed to implementing sustainable development through our management of resources, the learning opportunities we provide and in our engagement with the local community. By doing this we aim to be a leader on sustainable development within further education by 2008. This policy and our subsequent strategy are tools to help us achieve this.
The college support the approach taken by the UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy ‘Securing the Future’, 2005 and the Learning and Skills Council’s Strategy for Sustainable Development, ‘From Here to Sustainability’, 2005.
Lancaster and Morecambe College and has adopted the following principles to support the implementation of sustainable development.
- Understand and balance the environmental, social and economic impacts of the decisions we make;
- Live within environmental limits, ensuring the prudent use of natural resources and the prevention of pollution;
- Take a long term perspective in all that we do;
- Ensure a ‘whole institution approach’ to sustainable development
- Continual improvement, through setting objectives and targets, monitoring and review.
To achieve this we will focus on the following priority areas identified by the Learning and Skills Council.
- Building Capacity: supporting behaviour change within the college;
- Buildings and Estates: reducing the impact of the campus and related construction projects;
- Curriculum: promoting education or sustainable development through our teaching and training;
- Community Participation: enhancing our excellent links with the communities within which we operate.
Further information on how we will progress sustainable development within the college can be found in our sustainable development strategy and action plan. We will report on progress against these priority areas on an annual basis.
