An Apprenticeship is a perfect choice if you want to continue your studies and develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours in a specific industry, while also earning a salary in full-time employment; kickstarting your long-term career path.

This course is for those who are employed or wish to be employed as a Production Chef and would like to gain a qualification as a professional chef.

Production Chefs work as part of a team in time-bound and often challenging kitchen environments, for example; schools, hospitals, the Armed Forces, care homes and high street casual dining or pub kitchens. They report to the Senior Production Chef or appropriate line manager.

Entry Requirements

To study the Standard Production Chef Intermediate Apprenticeship, you must;

  • Show enthusiam and have a proven interest in the subject area

  • Enjoy working with people

  • Have a commitment to study

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have good interpersonal skills

You must have 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or higher including Maths or English OR a Level 1 related qualification PLUS grade D/3 or higher in Maths or English.

Course Activities

As a Production Chef, you will:

  • Maintain excellent standards of personal, food and kitchen hygiene

  • Ensure compliance to procedures, menu specifications and recipes

  • Produce food meeting portion controls, and budgetary constraints

  • Adapt and produce dishes to meet special dietary, religious and allergenic requirements

  • Follow, complete and maintain production schedules, legislative and quality standard documentation

  • Use specialist kitchen equipment

  • Communicate internally and externally with customers and colleagues

  • Commit to personal development activities

You will be assessed against the Apprenticeship Standard using three complementary assessment methods; an on-demand test, a practical observation and a professional discussion. Assessment methods may take place in any order and all assessment methods are equally weighted.

On completion of this course you will receive a nationally recognised Apprenticeship Standard qualification as a Level 2 Production Chef. This Apprenticeship is expected to take 12-18 months to complete.

Progression Opportunities

Upon completion of this Apprenticeship, you may decide to go onto the Chef De Partie Level 3 Apprenticeship or alternatively continue onto full time work within the industry. Many apprentices are offered a permanent role within their company once they have completed their qualification.
