This is a practical based qualification, meaning most lessons are taken in the Joinery Workshop and learners are given work to reflect their abilities that will become harder as skills improve.
Learners will be assessed through a variety of methods on this qualification, including: projects, assignments, exams, online tests and practical performance observations.
This 3-day weekly course has a 50:50 practical to theory ratio and requires learners to complete regular revision homework.
- Course Overview
You will study the following:
Using portable power tools
Fixing skirtings, architraves and hinged doors
1st Fixing Before Plastering
2nd Fixing After Plastering
Using Circular Saws
All LMC students will receive tutorial support and take a programme of Functional Skills including English & Maths if necessary.
LMC has guest speakers along with joint events for all students. There is also an excellent opportunity to take part in National Citizen Service (NCS) which gives learners opportunities for bonding and stepping outside of their comfort zones.
A written exam will be taken at the end of the year covering all the units taught in the theory classes, covering different building techniques within construction and the principles of construction and carpentry.
In addition, nearing the end of the qualification, learners will complete a practical timed assessment, which will cover a task that will have been practiced throughout the year.
Please note, learners will also be required to complete a minimum of 50 hours work experience.
- Progression Routes
Upon course completion many of our students choose to progress straight into full time work or the Level 2/3 Carpentry & Joinery Apprenticeship programmes.

- Entry Requirements
All students aged 16 -19 are required to have a grade C/4 or higher in Maths and English, or a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in both these subjects.
Learners should also have completed a Level 2 qualification in Carpentry, and must commit to following the College Code of Conduct (e.g. show a commitment to study through attendance, punctuality & behaviour).
Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.
