The Level 2 UAL Diploma is for students with a keen interest in music production who want to explore making music in many different ways whether that is performing, recording, mixing or digitally composing and arranging. As well as making music and sound you will develop your understanding of the music industry and think about your place in it. The course will start to explore sound for the music industries thinking about film, TV, Games, Video and online platforms.

Course Overview

Previous trips have seen music students visit Parr Street Studios (Liverpool), Hansa Studios (Berlin) and perform in Liverpool, Berlin, Cyprus, Portugal as well as regular termly gigs in local venues.

Learners will be assessed through a range of formative and summative methods. Formative assessment methods are designed to provide a foundation for students in the fundamentals of music performance and production as well as developing a broader contextual understanding of the industry. Summative assessment methods are designed to enable students to deliver a collaborative music performance and production project at the end of the Diploma.

Assignments are designed through consultation with industry professionals, employers and previous students to ensure their industry relevance.

Industry Links

A range of guest lecturers and industry based panel discussions have been hosted by the Music team at LMC with panellists from SiCo, Sony, Rock People Management and Red Room Events. This course will also include engagement with local companies we have strong links to within industry such as More Music and Promenade Music.

Progression Routes

Previous students have gone on to study song writing, music production, sound engineering and music performance at various universities, and achieved Masters degrees from Goldsmiths and Edinburgh University.

LMC Music alumni work have gone on to work as freelance promoters, live sound engineers, freelance producers, sound designers for film and composers for video games. Some have even gone on to work for acclaimed recording studios and tour Europe as performers.

Entry Requirements

To study this course, you must:

  • Show enthusiasm and have a proven interest in the subject area

  • Have evidence of good skills in practical subjects

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have good interpersonal skills

  • Have a commitment to study

Students must also have 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or higher including English or Maths OR a related qualification PLUS grade D/3 in English or Maths.
