This is an interesting and challenging one year Full Time course which is designed for students wishing to gain employment in the Health & Social Care sector, or wishing to progress on to Health & Social Care Level 3. The course is a mixture of academic study and vocational experience.

This course enables students to gain a wide knowledge and experience of the many aspects of Health & Social Care as well as helping learners become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of the professionals within the sector.

Upon course completion learners receive a Pearson's Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care.

Course Overview

Health & Social Care Level 2 students have previously taken trips to Thackeray Medical Museum and Intu Trafford Centre, in addition to participating in a variety of voluntary and fundraising activities for the local community.

Students spend 3-4 days in College each week and are assessed continuously throughout the course. Formal assessments are in the form of assignments which can take many forms such as: written reports, essays and case studies. Students also have to successfully pass two exams on healthy living and human lifespan development. Students are also assessed whilst on placement by their placement supervisor.

  • Services in Health & Social Care

Previous Level 2 students have also participated in a Medical Mavericks interactive classroom sessions trying out replica medical technology e.g. taking fake blood from a fake arm.

Industry Links

Within this course learners go on two block placements in Health & Social Care settings. Many learners get invited back for employment from the settings after having a successful placement experience.

Information is also shared with learners about volunteering and Health & Social Care employment opportunities.

Some units have recently been updated during curriculum planning to meet the current needs of employers. For example, last year the Level 2 group completed a unit on Creative & Therapeutic Activities for working with service to ensure they had the skills to organise activities whilst out on placement.

Progression Routes

Upon completion of this course students may progress onto the Health & Social Care Level 3 course to expand their industry knowledge or may choose to move on to applying for roles in the Health & Social Care sector. Students may also apply for Apprenticeship roles within the Health and Social Care industry.

There are a broad range of exciting roles within the Health & Social Care sector. The qualification gives learners the potential opportunity, in due course, to enter employment in a range of junior job roles across the health and social care sector.

Career and job roles may include:

  • Care worker

  • Healthcare support worker

  • Personal assistant

  • Support worker

  • Community support worker

  • Support staff

Entry Requirements

To study this course, you must:

  • Show enthusiasm for the subject area

  • Complete a satisfactory DBS check

  • Enjoy working with other people

  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills

You must also have 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or higher, including English or Maths OR a related Level 1 qualification PLUS grade D/3 or higher in English or Maths.


All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications or GCSE English and Maths if not they do not already have these qualifications awarded at grade C/4 or higher.

Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant English and Maths qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment.
