This is a one year, Full Time Level 2 course geared towards a career in the fast growing industry of Sport. The course is suitable for school leavers who are seeking employment within the sports industry. It also provides a solid basis for progression to further study within this area. As part of this course you will be expected to complete regular home study tasks as well as complete directed study sessions in College.

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including observation in a real working environment by assessors, oral questioning, written knowledge papers, practical assessment with supporting evidence, and a portfolio of evidence. There are also some exam units on the programme. The assessments are formal and practical assessments are based on your ability to work in sports.

Course Overview

There are a variety of activities available to our Sport Level 2 students including participation in the National Citizen Service programme, career and industry related trips, supporting sporting events within College and attending guest speaker talks.

The course is made up of 7 units, each focusing on key areas of Sport. On this course you will study to develop coaching skills working towards coaching qualifications. The course is largely practical based with supplementary theory sessions.

The units covered include:

  • Sports Coaching

  • Participation in Sport

  • Sports Skills & Tactics

  • Physical Fitness & Injuries in Sport

  • Planning, Delivering & Evaluating an Activity Session

  • Performance Analysis for Sport

  • Strength & Conditioning

Students on this course are also eligible to trial for The LMC Football Academy; a full-time football programme available to all students across Sports & Public Services at Lancaster & Morecambe College, delivered by UEFA qualified coaches. The Academy can offer you:

  • Full-time education and training in football

  • Excellent progression routes, including scholarships to USA & Canada

  • Valuable sport related work experience

  • FA Level coaching qualification

  • European project opportunities, including a football tour to Alicante

  • Strength and conditioning training

  • Completion of your NCS award

  • Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh

Industry Links

As part of this course you will complete two 1-week placements within the Sports & Leisure industry, increasing your skills and knowledge within this industry.

Volunteering is also encouraged as part of this course and there will be volunteering opportunities available in College to help develop skills in the industry.

In addition to this students will have the opportunity to meet people who are currently working within the Sports & Leisure industry when we welcome guest speakers onto our campus.

Progression Routes

Upon course completion progression opportunities include moving on to the Level 3 Sport course within College (subject to meeting the entry requirements) or progression onto employment within the industry.

Areas of employment for those completing this course include; sports clubs, local authority leisure centres, Sports centres and private health clubs.

Entry Requirements

To study Sport Level 2 you must:

  • Show evidence of good sporting ability

  • Have an interest in Sport, health & fitness

  • Demonstrate an appropriate level of fitness to take part in practical aspects of the course

  • Enjoy working as part of a team

  • Have problem solving skills

  • Show a commitment to the course

You must also have 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or higher including English or Maths OR a related Level 1 qualification PLUS grade D/3 or higher in English or Maths.

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications or GCSE English and Maths if not already awarded a grade C/4 or higher in these subjects.

If you have a grade D/3 at GCSE you will study English and/or Maths. Students with a grade lower than D/3 will work towards GCSE through the study English & Maths Functional Skills.

Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant English and Maths qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment.
