This course provides an opportunity for students who have ambitions and aspirations of a career in the creative industries to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure that is stimulating and demanding. This is a very practical course which explores a broad range of Art & Design specialist areas. The course is suitable for school leavers and adults who would like a career in the creative industries, or those who are progressing from Level 2 Art & Design courses.

On completion of the course students will be awarded a Creative Practice: Art, Design & Communication UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Course Overview

The course is made up of 6 units:

Year 1

  • Unit 1 - The Creative Process

  • Unit 2 - Developing Creative Practice

  • Unit 3 - Responding to a set Brief

These units are taught through a series of practical project briefs designed to introduce students to a range of Art & Design activities including drawing, artist research and experimenting with a range of 2D, 3D and digital processes.

Year 2

  • Unit 4 - Researching a Specialist Industry Practice

  • Unit 5 - Specialist Technical Skills Development

  • Unit 6 - Specialist Creative Outcome

The second year of the course allows students to further develop their skills and specialise in a number of areas. Students will be introduced to further technical skills such as photography and printmaking. At the end of the course learners produce a final project which is showcased at our end of year exhibition, and is graded to award the overall grade for the qualification.

Course activities often include visits to art galleries and museums including Liverpool Tate and Manchester City Art Gallery. We also visit locations in the local area to take photographs and make sketches for project research.

Level 3 Art & Design incorporates live projects where possible to give learners work related experience relevant to their course. Past briefs for Level 3 students have included designing artwork to promote mental health awareness for Lancashire Libraries and designing costumes for Ludus Dance for the Light Up Lancaster Festival.
