Business and Accounting at LMC
Choosing to study in the business department will give you access to an exciting subject that is relevant across all employment sectors. All organisations are businesses, so studying Business as an option allows you flexibility across a variety of sectors, whether that’s fund-raising for a local charity or working abroad for a global blue-chip company. The teaching staff are well qualified with a breadth of experience in a number of industry sectors and students appreciate learning from people who have actually done it as well as teach it.

Past students have gone on to study business, marketing, law and management at some of the UK’s top rated universities including Lancaster University, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Liverpool, Edge Hill and John Moore, Liverpool. Career options include accountancy, finance and banking, human resources, marketing, retail management, events planning or starting your own business.
On the Course: Training with Virgin
Students on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business (LMC) recently enjoyed a mock recruitment and selection event with Virgin Trains. Held in the LMC Business and Conference Centre, the day was designed to give students the experience of a selection process in a large customer service organisation.
To prepare for the event students competed an online application form and had the opportunity to create or update their CV to include with their application. On the day the selection process consisted of: meet and greet where the students had to demonstrate positive body language and good interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build a rapport, team building activities, speed interviewing and individual interviews.
At the end of the day all results were collected and Virgin Trains are returning to College in the next couple of weeks to provide each student with one to one feedback on their performance so they understand their strengths and areas to develop which they will be able to use in future interviews. Virgin Trains staff identified 11 excellent candidates amongst the students who have been offered work placement opportunities for March 2016 within their organisation.
All the students felt they benefitted from the day. Dom Aye said “I had a great time, it was really good and interesting to see what happens in the process”. Seemal Shah said “It was even better than I had thought and it was interesting to see that they used varied and different ways to assess us”. Steven Hodgeson said “When can I start working for Virgin Trains? It was really interesting to see the process and gain professional experience from a company”.
Business tutor Sarah Armstead said “This day gave the students experience of a realistic interview and selection day with Virgin Trains. The students’ personalities and actions were judged against the company’s values, such as “Daringly Bold” and “Insatiably Curious” in a variety of scenarios. The students will then be given honest, one to one feedback from the management team and find out whether or not they would have been called forward to the next stage of talent bank formal interviews.”
Programme Area Manager for Hospitality, Business, Travel & IT at LMC Jon Lloyd said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the college to work with such a positive employer. Virgin Trains staff identified some high flyers amongst the students who they have offered placement opportunities to for them to complete as part of their course and are keen to run another session with us in the future”.

What do I need to join?
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including Maths and English OR a Level 2 related qualification PLUS grade C/4 or higher in BOTH Maths and English.
Relevant work experience will also be considered
Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.
An apprenticeship in a genuine job, with training, meaning apprentices learn and gain skills and professional competencies in their chosen career, whilst receiving a wage.
Apprenticeships are suitable for well-motivated people who are focussed and know which career path they want to follow. They offer high quality work-based training as an alternative to full time study.
This programme is aimed at people who are employed, or are seeking employment. You will need to be 16 years of age or over. Apprenticeships are available at level 2 and level 3.
