The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Public Services is a one year, full time, work related course aimed at students who wish to consider a career in one of Britain’s Uniformed Public Services including the: Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Police, Prison Service and Fire & Rescue Service.

The objectives of this qualification are to provide you with:
• An understanding of the Uniformed Public Services sector
• The opportunity to investigate career opportunities in the Uniformed Public Services
• The ability to prepare for a recruitment interview
• An understanding of the personal commitment and fitness requirements needed to be employed in a uniformed service role
• An understanding of the importance of health and hygiene and health & safety for those in uniformed service roles
• The opportunity to understand and develop the skills and qualities needed to work in a range of uniformed Services, e.g. team work, communication, problem solving, navigation and drill.

Course Overview

Throughout the one-year course you will study the following 9 units:

  • Role and Work of the Public Services • Working Skills in the Public Service Sector • Citizenship, Society and the Public Services • Crime and its Effects on Society • Employment in the Public Services • Public Services and Community Protection • Health, Fitness and Lifestyle for the Public Services • Land Navigation by Map and Compass • Expedition Skills

Each unit is assessed at pass, merit and distinction level. There will be a requirement for some of the assignments be completed at home, alongside revision for external assessments.

The units are a mixture of practical and theory, with many of the units having varied assessment methods.

During this course students take part in a range of activities (if eligible) that help them develop the skills and knowledge required to join the Uniformed Public Services. Activities include:

  • Team building residential • Army ‘Look at Life’ Course • Team building tasks • Outdoor activities e.g. orienteering, hill walking and rock climbing • Talks from members of the Uniformed Public Services • Trips and visits to a variety of Uniformed Public Services

Students on this course are also eligible to trial for The LMC Football Academy; a Full Time football programme available to all students across Sports & Public Services at Lancaster & Morecambe College, delivered by UEFA qualified coaches. The Academy can offer you:

  • Full Time education and training in football

  • Excellent progression routes, including scholarships to USA & Canada

  • Valuable sport related work experience

  • FA Level coaching qualification

  • European project opportunities, including a football tour to Alicante

  • Strength and conditioning training

  • Completion of your NCS award

  • Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh

Assessment methods

The course is assessed in many ways with both academic and practical abilities explored. Assignment tasks range from writing reports, to creating presentations, as well as carrying out practical assessments and sitting exams.

Industry Links

Students will complete a 2 week work placement that will help them develop some of the work based skills required for entry into the Uniformed Public Services. Students will also meet members of the Uniformed Public Services by taking part in (where eligible):
• A one week ‘Army Look at Life’ course
• Talks from members of the Uniformed Public Services
• Visits to different Uniformed Public Services

Progression Routes

The course prepares you for the selection procedures of the Uniformed Public Services and allows you to progress onto a higher level course such as Public Services Level 3.

There are a wide variety of exciting roles within the Uniformed Public Services, including:

  • SoldierSecurity Officer • Search & Rescue Worker • Royal Navy Officer • Prison Instructor • Police Officer • Firefighter • Dog Handler • Bodyguard

Entry Requirements

To study this course you must have 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or higher, including English or Maths OR a related Level 1 qualification PLUS grade D/3 or higher in English or Maths.

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications or GCSE English and Maths if not already awarded a grade C/4 or higher.

Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant English and Maths qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment.

All applicants for a Uniformed Public Service course at Lancaster & Morecambe College should be aware that the majority of Uniformed Public Services have their own medical and fitness entry requirements. Each Uniformed Public Service also has a fitness test that has to be passed as part of their selection process.

Although these may not prevent you from joining the course they could prevent you from gaining future employment within your chosen service.

You must be able to fully participate in all practical tasks for successful completion of the course.

This can be discussed further at interview.
