Fabrication & Welding Level 1 is designed to give learners the basic engineering skills and knowledge to prepare them for a career in the fabrication industry. You will develop safe working practices and competency in fabrication and welding in order to progress into further studies or employment.

Course Overview

Your main challenge is to enjoy your work, take part in activities and try to make each piece of work better than the last. You will study the following:

  • Hand fitting

  • Working safely in an engineering environment

  • Working Effectively and efficiently engineering

  • Using and communicating technical information

  • MIG welding

  • Fabrication of thick plate

All LMC students will receive tutorial support and take a programme of Functional Skills including English & Maths.

LMC has guest speakers along with joint events for all students. There is also an excellent opportunity to take part in National Citizen Service (NCS) which gives learners opportunities for bonding and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

Progression Routes

Upon course completion many of our students choose to progress onto the Level 2 Fabrication & Welding course, while some students choose to progress straight into full time work or an Apprenticeship.

There are a variety of exciting roles within the Fabrication & Welding industry, such as:

  • Pipe Welder

  • Boilermaker

  • Arc Welder

  • TIG Welder

  • MIG Welder

  • Steel Fitter

  • Blacksmith

  • Window Fitter

Entry Requirements

To study this course you must:

  • Have an enthusiasm for the subject area

  • Show a commitment to study

  • Be able to work independently

You must also have 3 GCSEs at grade G/1 or higher PLUS grade F/2 or higher in English & Maths.

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English & Maths qualifications or GCSE English & Maths if not already awarded a grade C/4 or higher in these subjects.

If you have a grade D/3 at GCSE you will study English &/or Maths GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D/3 will work towards GCSE through the study of English & Maths Functional Skills.

Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.
