The Technical Baccalaureate in Engineering is an ideal alternative to A Level study for those who are interested in Engineering as a career. It has the advantage of UCAS points allowing you to apply for university if you wish to, whilst also giving you a good basis for an Engineering Apprenticeship.
Required qualifications before starting this course:
GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or higher
2-3 Science GCSEs at 4/C or higher
A total of 6 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above
Some grade GCSEs at grade 5 or higher will indicate the suitability to study the Technical Baccalaureate.
To study A level Maths a grade 6/B or other equivalent Maths qualification is needed.
Personal traits looked for are:
An enthusiasm for problem solving and practical subjects
A commitment to study (attendance, punctuality & behaviour)
The ability to work independently
The Advanced Technical Certificate in Engineering is delivered as 1 year course.
The 6 topics studied in the Advanced Certificate are as follows:
Electronics & Electrical Engineering
This will give you a good grounding to enter numerous fields of Engineering such as: Mechanical, Nuclear, Aeronautical, and Electrical Engineering.
The course is assessed with an exam in February/March as well as a design and build project. If you are unsuccessful in the first exam or wish to improve your grade you can redo the exam in June with no penalty.
At the end of this year you can leave with your certificate which will qualify you for a Level 3 Apprenticeship or alternatively, you can apply for the second year of this course increasing your qualification to an Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering.
The Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Engineeringis delivered as a 2 year course.
The first year is the Advanced Technical Certificate, with the second year focussing on the following topics:
Engineering Workshop Practice
Innovation & New Technologies
Robotics & Automated Manufacture
In addition, learners will complete 3 projects and once again in February/March learners will sit an exam. If they do not pass this exam, they will have the opportunity to sit it again in May.
Top marks will give you the equivalent to 2 A levels at A*. This will give you the UCAS points needed to study at HNC level. For those who wish to apply to university and have a 6 at GCSE Maths, we teach A level Maths alongside the Technical Baccalaureate allowing you to obtain the equivalent UCAS points of 3 A Levels.
Both Year 1 and Year 2 are Full Time and you will be in college once a week. A level Maths will require 1 further day of study. You will be expected to study at home to complete the work and assignments set.
Both the Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Engineering and the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering require a 2 week compulsory work placement in an Engineering environment.
These work placements give learners excellent hands on experience, putting them at the head of the queue when applying for jobs in Engineering. Many of our students obtain Apprenticeship offers as a result of their placements.
At the end of Year 1, your qualification will qualify you to apply for Level 3 Apprenticeships. Completion of both years can lead to HNC, degree level study or higher Apprenticeships. Past students have gained places at a variety of universities or have gone on to work for well-known Engineering companies such as EDF Energy.
There are a wide range of exciting job roles within the Engineering including:
