This qualification aims to provide you with a nationally recognised English qualification, equivalent to GCSE English grade 4+ and widely recognised by employers, Colleges and Universities as such.

The course is suitable for those who looking to further their English skills in work or study and need a Level 2 qualification, but do not wish to follow the one-year GCSE programme.

Delivered in a flexible format that fits around your existing commitments, you will engage in individual study and tutor-taught workshops, where regular attendance required.

With regular attendance and work completed outside of the classroom, it is estimated that you can complete the course in 12 – 15 weeks. On completion of the course you will gain a Functional Skills Level 2 English qualification.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, a recent Level 1 English qualification or recent English study is useful.

Course Activities

During the course you will cover reading comprehension, writing and speaking, listening and communicating.

Topics include:

  • Reading: Presentational features of texts; language techniques, tone and style, reading for detail

  • Writing: Structure and planning, language and forma, grammar, punctuation and spelling

  • Speaking and Listening: Participating in formal and informal discussions, presentation skills

Progression Opportunities

This course can lead onto other Part Time or Full Time courses at Lancaster & Morecambe College, including:

  • GCSE English

  • Access to HE
