This qualification is delivered as a face-to-face workshop and aims to provide you with the Maths and/or English skills needed to function at home, in work and life. At Level 2, the course provides you with an equivalent to GCSE grade 4+ and is widely recognised by employers, Colleges and Universities.

Delivered in a flexible format that fits around your existing commitments, you will engage in individual study and tutor-taught workshops, where regular attendance required.

On completion of the course you will gain a Functional Skills Maths and/or English qualification.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Course Activities

In Level 2 Maths workshops, you will study problem solving, number, measure, shape and space and data handling.

Topics include:

  • Number: Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, fractions, percentages and decimals, ratio, proportion, scales and formulas

  • Measure, Shape and Space: Perimeter, area and volume, money and time, 2D, 3D, symmetry and map scales

  • Data Handling: Drawing tables, graphs and charts, averages and range, interpreting data

In Level 2 English workshops you will study reading comprehension, writing, speaking, listening, and communicating.

Topics include:

  • Reading: Presentational features of texts, language techniques, tone and style, reading for detail

  • Writing: Structure and planning, language and format, grammar, punctuation, and spelling

  • Speaking & Listening: Participating in formal and informal discussions, and presentation skills

Progression Opportunities

This course can lead onto other Part Time or Full Time courses at Lancaster & Morecambe College, including:

  • GCSE Maths and/or English

  • Access to HE
