Job Description

We require an Assistant Accountant to work in our Finance department, supervising day to day activities, assisting in the preparation of monthly management accounts, undertaking bank and control account reconciliations and supporting the team and budget holders within College. You will have experience of working in a busy financial environment and have a minimum Level 3 AAT or equivalent qualification. This post could also be suitable for an individual wishing to undertake a Level 4 AAT apprenticeship.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose:  

  • To support the smooth running of the Finance department and Financial Management Team
  • To be responsible for taking the monthly and annual accounts to trial balance stage.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist/deputise for the Head of Finance & Procurement in the preparation of the College’s monthly and annual management and statutory accounts.

  2. Assist the Head of Finance & Procurement in the analysis of variances between budget and actual on budget holders’ accounts.

  3. Assist with maintaining budget controls for all College budgets, and liaise with budget holders and the Head of Finance & Procurement.

  4. Assist the Head of Finance & Procurement in the training of budget holders and relevant staff in the use of financial information.

  5. Work with the Head of Finance & Procurement to review non-pay spend areas with a view to identifying VFM efficiencies including review of supplier contracts/pricing.

  6. Monitor incoming cash flow and notify relevant departments of receipt of funding.

  7. Perform monthly bank reconciliations.

  8. Maintain an up to date Fixed Asset Register.

  9. Work with Student Finance to ensure that support funding is effectively recorded.

  10. Prepare input documentation for BACS payment runs.

  11. Provide advice on the coding of transactions, and liaise with the Personnel Department to ensure that staff are coded correctly in the College payroll.

  12. Monitor the recording and despatch of all College purchase orders.

  13. Monitor the processing and recording of purchase invoices to ensure they are processed on a regular basis including reconciliation of supplier statements.

  14. Assist the Vice Principal: Finance & Resources and Head of Finance & Procurement where required.

  15. Provide cover in the Finance Department in the event of absence.

  16. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post as required.

Skills & Experience Required

Experience 

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Experience of working in a busy Financial environment

Desirable - Measured by application form and interview

  • Experience of people management or supervision 

Qualifications

Essential - Application form and certificates

  • GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2)
  • Minimum Level 3 AAT or equivalent relevant qualification 

Skills / Abilities

Essential - Measured by application form, skills test and interview

  • Financial and IT skills including spreadsheets and word processing
  • Ability to take a set of accounts to trial balance stage 

Desirable - Measured by application form, skills test and interview

  • Experience of producing management accounts
