Job Description

Lancaster & Morecambe College require a Groundsperson to undertake the day to day maintenance of the college grounds and sports pitches alongside other facilities/estates-related duties as part of the site supervision team.
You will have experience of grounds/sports surfaces maintenance, driving tractors and grounds maintenance equipment (including ride-on mower) and hold a full UK driving licence.

Responsible to Head of Estates, Safety and Wellbeing via Estates Operations Co-ordinator (EOC)

 *2 days to be taken on identified dates during the Christmas closure period as notified on the College calendar

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose:  

  • To undertake day to day maintenance of the college grounds including sports pitches and surfaces and other facilities/estates-related duties as part of the site supervision team.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

  1. Undertake routine preparation and maintenance work on external sports surfaces, facilities and apparatus, including artificial surfaces and goal frames/rugby posts etc., to maintain, develop and sustain safe, high-quality playing surfaces.

  2. Cut sports pitches, grass amenity, rough and semi rough areas across the site.

  3. Set up the playing surfaces and mark out pitches to college and Morecambe Football Club/Academy requirements.

  4. Undertake cultivation and gardening work, including weed control, to ensure that the college grounds, lawns, and beddings are kept to high standard.

  5. Lead on the development of a work schedule alongside the EOC to ensure the grounds, including its trees and vegetation are maintained in a safe, sustainable state and meet the needs of the college.

  6. Respond to out of hour’s calls as a result of weather-related damage or vandalism as required by the EOC.

  7. Carry out routine inspections of the all college grounds, including hard surface areas such as the car park to check the integrity of drainage systems and also for damage. Inspections will include regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) inspections requiring the production of reports on completion to the EOC.

  8. Be responsible for ordering the required consumables to carry out the tasks required of the role in liaison with the EOC.

  9. Be responsible for ensuring plant and equipment used in the role is kept and maintained in a safe and serviceable condition in liaison with the EOC.

  10. Clear pathways and steps of any snow or ice, treating with rock salt; tidy and hose down bin areas as necessary.

  11. Act as first aider and work with the ESW team to support emergency evacuations of buildings and emergency service arrival.

  12. Assist the Estates team with site maintenance tasks when weather conditions affect outdoor working and with room set ups as required. 

  13. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post as required.

Skills & Experience Required


Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Substantial relevant experience in grounds/ sports surface maintenance
  • Experience of driving tractors and grounds maintenance equipment including ride-on mower.

Desirable - Measured by application form and interview

  • Experience in tree management
  • Experience in sustainable grounds development


Essential - Application form and certificates

  • GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2)
  • L2 Certificate in sports amenity & turf maintenance or other relevant practical horticulture qualification.
  • First Aid qualification (or within 12 months of appointment)
  • PA1/2 & 6 spraying certificate
  • Full UK driving licence (able to drive tractor on public highways)

Desirable - Application form and certificates

  • Minibus driver with MIDAS qualification (or within specified time period)  

Skills / Abilities

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Ability to undertake minor repairs and routine maintenance work

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment within the scope of the Manual Handling/Lifting regulations and capable of climbing steps and ladders

  • Capable of working on own initiative and as part of a team

  • Ability to work under pressure 

  • Sound interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing

  • A working knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation

  • Suitable to work in an education environment among young people
  • Reliable, honest and responsible.
  • Reliably contactable at home in a site emergency out of hours and have own means of transport to attend site quickly
