Job Description

Lancaster & Morecambe College seeks a highly motivated Lead Co-ordinator in Hairdressing to support the development of work-based skills in the workplace by facilitating the College’s relationship with employers, supporting learners to achieve and promoting work-based skills with new employers. The role will involve working with curriculum staff to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours of every learner.
Recent and relevant industrial experience in Hairdressing and experience of working with young people is essential to the role. You will have good supervisory and people skills, be organised and have the ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines.

You should hold a minimum Level 3 qualification in area of competence and GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent). If you do not already hold a 1st stage teaching qualification and Level 3 Training Assessment and Quality Assurance Award, you will be supported to achieve these within a specified timescale.

**Holding a clean, current driving licence with business insurance and access to own vehicle is essential to the role.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose:  

  • To support the development of work-based skills in the workplace by facilitating the College’s relationship with employers, supporting learners to achieve and promoting work-based skills with new employers
  • Working with curriculum staff to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours of every learner

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

  1. Manage and co-ordinate a caseload of work-based learners, ensuring timely completion and high achievement rates.

  2. Undertake Health and Safety risk assessments, ensuring that the placement is suitable and meets the required standards in line with contractual requirements.  Monitor and review Health and Safety at regular intervals on company premises. 

  3. Lead and coordinate the enrolment process, including initial advice and guidance; learner interviews; baseline assessments (maths, English, technical skills, knowledge and behaviours); and induction onto the relevant programme, ensuring that all initial learner records are completed accurately for full compliance at audit.

  4. Support the delivery plan and contribute to schemes of work for each work-based skills programme to ensure learners develop skills, knowledge and behaviours and meet all relevant criteria in a timely manner.

  5. Continually monitor learners’ records; progression; and skills, knowledge and behaviour development through the effective use of college tracking systems, ensuring you are making full use of this software to manage, record and evidence progress.

  6. In area of occupational competence, carry out IV of learners’ portfolios, assessments and work-based assessors in line with awarding body criteria.  Carry out workplace observations and support visits to ensure robust monitoring and timely progression of the learners’ qualifications.

  7. Maintain accurate records as required by the EV / Awarding Organisations, liaising with LMC’s examination team as appropriate. Organise standardisation and verification of assessment in line with College and Awarding Organisation requirements, including organisation of EV visits.

  8. Where issues with learning, progress or quality are identified, negotiate and work closely with tutors and employers to achieve effective resolution, seeking advice and support from the Pastoral and Learning Services teams as appropriate and referring more serious or complex cases to the Programme Area Manager in a timely manner.  Work closely with parents, guardians and outside support agencies in agreeing strategies that overcome barriers to participation or learning progression.

  9. Where issues with employment are identified, negotiate and mediate a resolution to benefit both parties and ensure continued successful progression of both the apprentice and employer relations.  Where appropriate draw upon the knowledge and expertise of internal colleagues and keep the Programme Area Manager appraised of more serious or complex issues.

  10. Meet regularly with appropriate curriculum staff, supporting them with any learning issues and in identifying when a candidate is ready for End Point Assessment.  Work with them to manage the End Point Assessment process.

  11. Plan, manage and continually monitor the 20% off the job training to ensure it is of high quality, contributing effectively to relevant skills and knowledge development and appropriate to the programme.  

  12. Support curriculum staff in providing appropriate objective information, advice and guidance to learners approaching completion, about progression and further opportunities in college or elsewhere.

  13. Arrange regular visits with learners in the workplace to complete reviews, exit reviews, work-based assessments and gathering learner / employer feedback. These will include identifying development needs; setting appropriate targets; monitoring skills development, including maths & English; and recording progress towards meeting the relevant standard.

  14. Liaise closely with Work-Based Skills Co-ordinators / Apprenticeships Manager / Functional Skills to ensure all learners are on track with all aspects of their development and programme.

  15. Undertake industrial updating and professional development to keep abreast of curriculum developments.

  16. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post as required.

Skills & Experience Required

Experience 

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Recent and relevant industrial experience in Hairdressing, preferably at supervisory level. 
  • Occupationally competent in Hairdressing and ongoing commitment to maintain CPD 
  • Experience of working with young people and/or adults in a training capacity
  • Awareness of Health & Safety legislation as applied in Hairdressing. 

Desirable - Measured by application form and interview

  • Monitoring health & safety in the workplace.
  • Awareness / experience of delivering apprenticeships in the workplace.

Qualifications

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Preparatory Certificate in Education & Training (PCET formerly PTTLS), or equivalent 1st stage teaching qualification, (within specified time scale).
  • A recognised qualification in area of occupational competence (level 3 or above)
  • Levels 3 Training Assessment and Quality Assurance Award or equivalent, (or within a specified timescale).
  • GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2)*

Desirable - Measured by application form and interview

  • Level 4 qualification in area of occupational competence
  • Level 4 Training Assessment and Quality Assurance Award or equivalent. 
  • Health and Safety Qualification

* You will be required to undertake a Literacy and/or Numeracy assessment at, or immediately after interview, if you do not have these qualifications or cannot provide the relevant certificates
