Job Description

Pastoral Mentor – Maternity Cover
Salary £23,223 per annum
37 hours per week

Lancaster & Morecambe College are looking for a Pastoral Mentor to support learners at LMC to achieve their full potential. You will work with the Safeguarding manager to ensure all support for learners is compliant with the current Keeping Children Safe in Education and Prevent Duty legislation, acting as a point of contact regarding wellbeing or pastoral matters. Part of this role will be to help support, develop, implement and monitor learner improvement plans with the aim of improving attendance, progress and achievement. 

Excellent communication skills, the ability to maintain confidentiality and experience of working with young people are essential to the role. You should hold a Level 2 qualification in Safeguarding/Child Protection/Prevent training or be willing to achieve this within an agreed timeframe, as well as holding GCSE’s Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English. You should also have, or be willing to undertake, a Level 2 Certificate in Mental Health.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose:      

  • Work with the Safeguarding Manager to ensure all support for learners is compliant with the current Keeping Children Safe in Education and Prevent Duty legislation.
  • Support learners pastorally, adhering to the internal safeguarding policy and procedures, referring learners to Safeguarding Manager where required.
  • Take responsibility for documenting all safeguarding referrals via the College centralised system.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

  1. Through contextualised Safeguarding provide pastoral support to those identified learners, referred by cross college curriculum areas. 

  2. Support new tutors in the delivery of a range of topics from the Central Tutorial at the tutor’s request. 

  3. As part of the Safeguarding team, identify, monitor and refer, when necessary, learners who are at risk from any safeguarding matters, including the wider and developing Prevent issues. 

  4. Liaise with cross college Programme Area Managers and curriculum teams to support learners to achieve and reach their full potential. 

  5. Advocate for and support learners who find themselves subject to the College’s behaviour and discipline policy procedures. 

  6. Act as a point of contact for learners regarding wellbeing or pastoral matters while supporting cross college curriculum teams as a point of contact for parents and carers.  

  7. Help support, develop, implement and monitor individual learner improvement plans with the aim of improving attendance, progress and achievement. Plans will be developed in collaboration with Safeguarding Manager, Personal Tutors and parents/guardians. 

  8. Carry out all administration necessary for the role, including updating college systems. Ensure timely collection and recording of data to facilitate detailed analysis and informed decisions about supporting learners and to measure the effectiveness of all interventions.

  9. Support the College disciplinary policy and procedures including the “report it” function, through thoroughly investigating incidents.

  10. Build up a detailed knowledge of support services available, serving as a single point of contact for learners and know when to access specialist support as appropriate.  

  11. Assist with learner induction and parents’ evenings, open events and meetings when required and attend all safeguarding team meetings.  Complete assigned actions arising from relevant team meetings and report back in a timely manner.

  12. Undertake relevant professional development and adhere to quality and confidentiality standards and procedures, working effectively with fellow team members in order to ensure a consistently high standard of service delivery.

  13. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post, including exam invigilation, as required.

Skills & Experience Required

Experience 

Essential - Measured by application form, skills test and interview

  • Working with young people individually and in groups
  • Delivering to young people individually or in small groups
  • Safeguarding or Child Protection in an educational setting
  • Tracking and monitoring progress
  • Some experience of leading discussion groups as well as planning and delivering tutorials across college on a range of topics

Desirable - Measured by application form, skills test and interview

  • Safeguarding duties in a Further Education college
  • Mentoring young people with mental health issues/ or who have experienced trauma

Qualifications

Essential - Measured by application form

  • NVQ 3 or equivalent
  • GCSE Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2)*
  • Level 2 Safeguarding/ Child Protection/ Prevent training (or within agreed timescale)
  • Initial teaching or training qualification (or willing to undertake)
  • Mental Health Level 2 Certificate or willingness to undertake

* You will be required to undertake a Literacy and/or Numeracy assessment at, or immediately after interview, if you do not have these qualifications or cannot provide the relevant certificates

  • Level 2 IAG
  • ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) knowledge or training

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a range of situations including group work
  • Ability to give detailed information and advice in a clear, non-judgemental and impartial manner and to remain calm and professional in a crisis
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and strict adherence to data protection protocols
  • Systematic, accurate and consistent approach to recording information and case studies, with excellent organisational and administrative skills
  • Strong IT skills including use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, email and the internet including e Safety
  • The ability to work autonomously and to prioritise tasks and work loads
  • Ability to deal tactfully and sensitively with difficult clients
  •  Ability to build rapport and work with a range of learners at differing levels of ability
