College Thanks Businesses Following Flood Damage
Following the November floods, Lancaster & Morecambe College have expressed their gratitude to everyone who came to their aid, including Bowker Limited, Carnforth Fire & Rescue, Watkins Hire Ltd, HSS Hire and Pets at Home.
The problems started early on the morning of Thursday 23rd November, when the flooding had created an issue with the boiler, resulting in the college closure due to the lack of heating. By midday, the College boiler house was flooded under 3ft of water, which had come from an underground duct.
Further flooding occurred in the Animal Studies department, the football field, marketing store and the archives. Unfortunately, some of the animals in the Animal Studies area had perished due to the flooding, including two quails and a love bird. Animal Studies Programme Area Manager, Victoria Bond said “I sincerely want to thank the Estates team who sprung into action when our animals were in need. I’m certain we would’ve lost more animals had the teams not acted so quickly, so our team are so very grateful. We were also supported by Pets at Home, White Lund who I’d also like to thank. They provided food and hay for the animals at no cost.” LMC were helped by HSS Hire to pump the water out of the animal enclosure.
Fortunately, by the Monday, Bowker Limited were able to install a temporary boiler which meant that the College could reopen. Richard Bowker, Managing Director from Bowker Limited wrote to LMC, saying “LMC has been a client of ours for over thirty years and trained over 150 of our apprentices, so if we can’t jump in to help you in your hour of need then something is sorely wrong.”
The College is currently in the process of obtaining quotes for a brand new custom-built boiler system. Louise Evans, Head of Estates, Safety & Wellbeing at LMC, said “We were fortunate to have the assistance of so many professionals in our time of need. I’d like to thank everyone who answered to our calls at such short notice. I’d like to say how proud I am of the way my team responded to the rapidly developing situation. They worked tirelessly to ensure there was minimal disruption to students’ education.”
