Posted: 16.05.2019

A group of Public Service Level 3 students at LMC, recently visited Altcar Training Camp in Liverpool to compete in the Army in Education Inter College competition. The event was delivered by military personnel from the 4th Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and included activities such as team tasks, fitness assessments, navigation tests and communication & technology skills.

The competition builds on learners’ current confidence, fitness levels & teamwork skills and provides a valuable insight into the Army Reserves.
The event also enables learners’ to develop their personal thinking and communication skills and provides them with the opportunity to speak to serving soldiers and officers.

LMC Public Service Tutor Sam Tinsley said ‘The students were amazing all day and were able to gain first-hand information about life in the Army. They showed a great attitude and came third overall in the competition which was a great achievement’.

Public Service students said ‘It was a great experience that we really enjoyed and some of the practical elements were a real challenge. It is an excellent part of the Public Service course at LMC’.

Sport & Public Services Deputy Programme Area Manager, Gary Kelly, said ‘The students gained an excellent insight into Army life and the practical and tactical thinking aspects of the competition really challenged them. The students deserve great credit for the way they applied themselves to all aspects of the programme. The event gave the students an opportunity to hear about the potential career pathways and Employability Skills required for employment within the Army. The visit also provided the students with an excellent opportunity to enhance their personal and social development skills’.

The activity is just one of the ways that LMC Public Services provide additional learning experiences and Employability Skills development for their students which run alongside their academic programme of study. Students also have the opportunity to access a range of experiences at LMC to enhance their future employment aspirations.
These include European visits to Slovakia, Poland and Bulgaria, Work Placement with a range of Public Service providers and the National Citizenship Service Programme.

LMC Public Service students can study on a range of courses at LMC which are matched to their academic ability and career pathways such as the NCFE Level 2 Entry to Uniformed Services, BTEC Level 3 Diploma’s in Public Services and BTEC HNC/D Level 4/5 in Public Service qualifications.
