Students Get Chilly On the Slopes
The group of 18 visited Manchester’s Chill Factore which was, for many of them, their first skiing experience.
Recently learning about different types of special interest holidays and different job prospects abroad, the trip provided students with the opportunity to experience the conditions and equipment required when working in a ski resort. Chill Factore is a popular tourist attraction in the North West and students were able to sample the facilities and understand the appeal of a major tourist attraction in the UK. With customer service such a crucial skill to work in the travel industry, students were also asked to observe and assess the service they received during the day.
The experience was part-funded by LMC’s Tackling Inactivity project which offers opportunities to take part in a range of weekly physical activities. The project aims to help students overcome emotional and physical barriers related to exercise and help develop sustainable exercise habits. Alongside the vocational benefits of experiencing what Chill Factore has to offer, it provided the students with another activity they can explore in the future to help develop more active habits.
Tackling Inactivity Project Leader, Adam Cowperthwaite, said: “It was a really enjoyable day and a fantastic opportunity for the students to get away from the classroom and experience something new.
For the majority, skiing was something they’d never tried and hadn’t thought much about - so there were a few nervous faces at the start! By the time we left there was a real buzz within the group and they were full of smiles. I hope this positive experience will be something they’ll talk to friends and family about, and ideally, re-visit in future.”
