Learning from the Professionals - Travel Industry Week
Students from Travel and Tourism and Air Cabin Crew courses were lucky enough to gain firsthand knowledge into some of the most popular careers in the tourism industry. There were representatives from across the industry to share their knowledge and experience with the current students.
Jordan McNamara, an Overseas Holiday Representative at TUI, gave students an insight into the role of a holiday representative. He talked about the interview process and TUI training and development. He also delivered a welcome meeting speech for the resort of Playa Blanc in Lanzarote making us feel like we were there in the resort. The day concluded with a sales techniques workshop enabling the students to practice their selling skills. Jordan studied Air Cabin Crew and Travel & Tourism at the College.
Emma Nevinson, Travel Consultant - Gates Travel, explained the complex role of an independent travel agent and gave the students an overview of the wide range of tour operator products that are available and how they meet the different needs of the customer.
Martin Duggan, Cabin Crew - Virgin Atlantic, talked about his role onboard the aircraft including examples of his shift patterns, destinations and flight schedules. He gave the students an insight into the skills and qualities of air cabin crew, the complex interview process and training requirements for Virgin Atlantic.
Tiana Harris, On-board Customer Service Assistant - Virgin Trains, talked about her responsibilities on the train, work schedules and the benefits of working for Virgin Trains.
Travel & Tourism students shared their thoughts after spending the week gaining knowledge and useful insights from the travel professionals. “We met some lovely people and they have helped me so much. They have given me a good insight into the jobs available.” Asena Bora. Classmate, Lewis Barnett added, “I found the talks beneficial, they were confident and helpful and gave excellent career advice.”
Air Cabin Crew student, Ellie Foulds said, “Jordan from TUI was helpful as he talked through the application process and tips and tricks that took onboard and gave an example of a presentation which was fab. Martin coming in from Virgin was highly beneficial. He was so smart and professional. I asked lots of questions and it benefitted me because I want to be cabin crew for Virgin.”
Megan Greenwood added, “Speaking to both Martin and Jordan was eye opening for me. It really made me want to succeed on the course and to progress well in the future.”
