Vehicle Engineering Challenge
The engineering challenge is based upon a series of workshops run by Peter Edwards from BAe and Alan Morgan from LMC which toured universities and colleges in the UK to raise awareness of the UK Land Speed Record bid car SSC Bloodhound which will travel faster than a bullet.
The competition was designed to help engineering students to apply their knowledge and skills to build a prototype vehicle which could both travel very fast and also overcome challenging obstacles.
All four teams worked extremely hard, calculating gear ratios and trying out different wheel and tyre designs and aerodynamic packages, as well as refuelling stops in the lounge.
The race itself was very close, with all teams equipping themselves well. The hill climb challenge proved to be the decider, with Enzo - Our Ferrari In Overalls climbing a 45 degree slope.
Edvard, a member of the winning team from the hill climbing challenge, quoted American Football legend Vince Lombardi, when he said:
"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."
Byron, another member of the same team, said:
"'I really enjoyed this project and am motivated to do more. The challenge taught me about mechanical principals and how to control speed electrically using pulleys, in a vehicle that was made from recycled materials."
Winning team from the hill climbing challenge: Edvard Lake, Byron Leonard and Paul Ziemlach
