Public Services Students Visit Preston Crown Court

Posted: 29.03.2019

Level 3 Diploma in Public Service students from Lancaster & Morecambe College recently completed a visit to Preston Crown Court. The second year students used the visit to gain knowledge for their unit covering “Aspects of the Legal System”.

The students got the opportunity to go into the public galleries of a number of courts to witness different cases being put before the Judge and Jury. The students viewed and listened to a variety of cases including perverting the course of justice and possession with intent to supply banned substances.
The students learned about the process followed in a Crown Court and observed the key people involved including the Judge, Jury, Clerk, Usher and Barristers who all played key roles in the judicial proceedings.

The students also heard witness testimonies after taking an oath and saw a jury being sworn in. They also observed other court employees involved in their job roles such as court security. The students went through the required search procedures before entering the building. They were warned of their requirements to turn off their mobile phones before going into a court as a phone ringing is a disruption and would be classed as a serious “contempt of court”.

Public Service Tutor, Sam Tinsley, said that “The students gained a huge amount of ‘live learning’ experience from the day. Visiting a real life court in action has provided the students with excellent learning to support their assignment submissions. It has also given them a valuable insight into court procedures which can inform their future career pathways”.

Public Service student Harry Barton said "I really enjoyed going to Preston Crown Court. We got to experience the intensity of the questions the legal employees asked the criminals to gather information. I would definitely recommend other students to go because it is a great learning experience."

Maddie Croft said "I really enjoyed the trip to Preston Crown Court as it was an eye opening experience. It was something you do not see every day. It was also beneficial for us to see what happens in a court environment as we will potentially experience this if we follow a legal career in the Public Services.
