Sport Students Volunteer at Lancashire Swim Gala

Posted: 14.05.2019

LMC Sport students recently gained practical work experience whilst supporting the Spar Lancashire Special Schools Swimming Gala held at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre.

The Level 3 Sport students volunteered to help run the event and completed a wide array of tasks. These included lane marshalling, competitor organisation, scoring and recording of results, race announcements, event logistics and participating in the medal ceremony.

The students developed their organisational, interpersonal and communication skills by managing the meeting and greeting operation of schools on their arrival for the event. This also included welcoming the Mayor of Lancaster who supported and viewed the event.

Sport lecturer Sarah Donohue said, “Students demonstrated excellent communication, showed their initiative and were role models for the young people competing”.

Sport & Public Services Deputy Programme Area Manager, Gary Kelly, said 'Sports students at LMC support the Swimming Gala at Salt Ayre every year which enhances their employability skills. The event provides our students’ with the opportunity to work with a diverse group of learners and develops their inclusive practices. Enhancing these skills are essential as employment in the Sport & Leisure industry can involve working with a wide range of age groups and participants of varying ability levels. The students deserve great credit for the way they applied themselves to all aspects of the event and for the way they represented LMC'.

This event is one example of the opportunities available to LMC students to gain essential work related experience and develop employability skills, which will support their career progression pathways.

Other opportunities include; European visits to France, Spain, Bulgaria, Poland and Slovakia for both coaching and cultural exchanges. Sports students also have the opportunity to complete the National Citizenship Service Award programme in addition to gaining their Football Association Level 1 Coaching in Football qualification with Lancashire Football Association.
