Apprenticeship taken: Level 3 Business Administration
Employer: The Marketing Department at Lancaster & Morecambe College
School: Ripley St Thomas
What were the best things about your Apprenticeship?
The best parts of my apprenticeship included getting the opportunity to plan events such as open evenings. This was something that I found interesting and was difficult to appreciate the preparation that goes into an event before doing my Apprenticeship. I also really enjoyed the creative projects like creating email campaigns, posters and logos.
Why did you choose your Apprenticeship?
I chose my apprenticeship because I felt the previous full time course wasn’t for me. I am a practical worker so for me being in a workplace and learning on the job was ideal. I chose Marketing because I took a particular interest in it when I was studying in school. I didn’t necessarily want to do administration but I understood that getting a foot hold in a marketing department would give me some invaluable experience as well as a Level 3 qualification and for me that was a great starting point.
Why did you choose Lancaster & Morecambe College?
The college was an obvious first choice as I had also done a course here before, so I was confident that the teaching would be to a high standard.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing this Apprenticeship?
I would say do it! I feel that having a full-time job has disciplined me in a way that school didn’t. It has built my confidence, helped me build my organisational and time management skills, as well as given me a wide range of transferable skills which are useful for any job.
What was your biggest accomplishment whilst doing your Apprenticeship?
Passing the Principles of Business Administration exam!
How did you career progress after completing your Apprenticeship?
After finishing my Apprenticeship with LMC, I secured a job with Lancashire County Council as a Business Support Officer on a temporary contract via the work start scheme that they run. The experience I had already gained allowed me to fit comfortably into a new office environment. Another position became available within the Council in their Pupil Access Team - who deal with School Admissions, Appeals, Exclusions and Free School Meal enquiries for the North of Lancashire. I applied for the job and got the place. Whilst running an events business alongside working, it became more apparent that a job working in live music was what I would really loved. I applied for a Live Events Production Degree with Backstage Academy and have now been offered a place on the course starting in the next academic year. Completing my Apprenticeship with LMC has been the best thing I ever did. The qualification is so versatile, giving me the experience to pick up Administration jobs from a young age, earning some good money whilst also enabling me to follow my ambitions as an Events Manager and study at University.
