After College, I’m aiming to specialise in working with dogs and hoping to apply for a role with a doggy day-care, as it’s something I’m genuinely passionate about. For anyone thinking about taking this course, I’d say if you love animals and want to build a future around them, this is a great place to start. You’ll learn so much, and it really sets you up for a career in doing what you love.

Amber Nicholson joined College in 2023. Her Careers Teacher at high school encouraged her to apply to LMC because of her strong interest in animals, and told her about the Animal Studies course. Amber initially enrolled onto the Land-Based Studies Level 1 course, and after successfully completing it, progressed to the Animal Care Level 2 course.

Amber shared that her favourite part of the course has been the trips she’s had the opportunity to attend. One of the highlights was a visit to Chester Zoo during her Level 1 studies. Another memorable aspect for her has been being encouraged to explore the Science route at LMC, which she believes will benefit her future career.

I have learned key skills at LMC that help me professionally, such as how to identify abnormal health and behaviour in animals, so I can support their wellbeing. I’ve also improved my teamwork skills by being paired with different people on projects, and have learnt not to feel nervous when speaking to them. This course has prepared me for working in a vets clinic or at a doggy day-care. Thanks to my work placement experience and working with dogs, I can now confidently handle energetic dogs and those that pull on leads. It has also helped me become more proactive in teamwork by asking others if they need help with anything.

Amber told us her biggest accomplishments so far include completing the Land-Based Studies Level 1 course and being accepted onto the Level 2 course thanks to her hard work. She’s also proud of earning her PDSA First Aid certification.
