Lancaster and Morecambe College are seeking a professional to lead the development of functional skills in the workplace, to manage and co-ordinate all functional skills for our apprenticeship programmes. The postholder will take responsibility for the effective management of the Work Based Functional Skills Co-ordinator team, ensuring they are developing the knowledge and behaviours of every learner.

Being a confident communicator with strong supervisory skills and the ability to motivate a team is essential to the role.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose:  

  • To lead the development of functional skills in the workplace by facilitating functional skills workshops in English / maths / Essential Digital Skills to support learner achievement.
  • To manage and co-ordinate all functional skills for apprenticeship programmes, recording outcomes and planning assessments/IV in line with College policy and awarding body requirements.
  • Effective management of Work Based Skills Functional Skills Coordinators ensuring they are developing the knowledge and behaviours of every learner.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

  1. Manage and co-ordinate maths, English and Essential Digital Skillsfunctional skills within apprenticeships, ensuring timely completions and high achievement rates.

  2. Deliver one to one or small group sessions within the workplace, college and/or remotely, whilst ensuring timely progression of the learners’ functional skills.

  3. Take day-to-day line management responsibility for a team of Work-Based Skills Functional Skills Coordinators, including recruitment; induction; caseload allocation; pay claim authorisation and professional development support.

  4. Meet regularly with team of Functional Skills Coordinators, supporting them with any learning issues and identifying when a candidate is ready for an exam.

  5. Oversee the individual delivery plan and schemes of work for each work-based skills learner to ensure learners develop the knowledge and behaviours to be exam ready in a timely manner.

  6. Oversee and monitor the initial and diagnostic assessment process in the workplace for all apprentices.  Liaise closely with all work-based skills co-ordinators to ensure all learners are effectively monitored, tracked and have timely interventions throughout their functional skills journey.

  7. Provide advice regarding the recruitment, selection and enrolment of learners on to apprenticeships programmes and relevant functional skills, ensuring correct levels are identified.

  8. Report to Assessments Boards regarding the progress for functional skills across all apprenticeships.

  9. Monitor all learner records to ensure functional skills are up to date and meet the required standards.  Ensure appropriate and timely use of all required documentation; skills’ assessments and online monitoring system (Smart Assessor).

  10. Carry out IV of learners’ functional skills assessments in line with awarding body criteria.  Maintain accurate records as required by the EV / Awarding Organisations, liaising with LMC’s examination team as appropriate. Organise standardisation and verification of assessment in line with College and Awarding Organisation requirements, including organisation of EV visits.

  11. Liaise with and develop close relationships with the College Skills for Life specialist team. 

  12. Facilitate and support small group development sessions for Work-Based Skills Advisers, in embedding English & maths progress within Apprenticeship programmes.

  13. Maintain quality standards on all programmes delivered in the work place in line with college policy.

  14. Promote other aspects of LMC Business and the College’s work with employers and attend Open Day and Evenings.

  15. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post as required..

Skills & Experience Required

Experience 

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Experience of delivering Key Skills and/or Functional Skills in the workplace and classroom environment.
  • Occupationally competent in main area(s) of responsibility and ongoing commitment to maintain Continuing Professional Development 
  • Experience of working with young people and/or adults in a training capacity

Desirable - Measured by application form and interview

  • Recent work experience in a relevant area 
  • Line management or supervisory experience

Qualifications

Essential - Measured by application form, interview and assessment.* 

  • Minimum Level 3 in Literacy or Numeracy
  • Level 3 Training Assessment and Quality Assurance Award or equivalent
  • Verifier Award (or within a specified timescale)
  • GCSE Grade C or above in English (or equivalent Level 2)* 

Desirable - Measured by application form, interview and assessment*

  • Teaching Qualification 

*You will be required to undertake a Literacy and/or Numeracy assessment at, or immediately after interview, if you do not have these qualifications or cannot provide the relevant certificates
