Course taken: IT Practitioners Level 3
School attended: Lancaster Royal Grammar School
What did you do after College? I started university at Newcastle University, from which I graduated with first class honours this year. I’m currently a PhD Student studying Computing Science.
What were the best bits about your course?
It was a great way for me to try out the subject of computer science before committing to it at university.
Why did you choose Lancaster & Morecambe College?
I was sick of the elitism of LRGS, and wanted to try out computing somewhere else.
How did LMC help you get where you are today?
The way I was treated, as an adult rather than a schoolchild, made a massive difference, and the level of responsibility expected allowed me to build up my motivation and resolve to succeed.
Whilst at LMC I had the opportunity to be a Student Governor and take part in a European project. I also found the SU extremely interesting to be involved with, sparking my interest in business, as well as providing an excellent source of CV material and interview anecdotes. Studying one subject in reasonably depth across the breadth of its topics also gave me a very strong grounding which enabled me to succeed well at university. Furthermore, mixing with a considerably broader background of people changed me immeasurably as a person, and LMC was the first educational establishment I went to where I wasn’t bullied and instead got on with everyone in my class. The communication skills I had to learn genuinely changed my life.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the same course?
Go for it, and make the most of every opportunity afforded to you! College is the best place to explore your own desire and capability for learning.
Anything else you would like to tell us?
Unequivocally I wouldn’t be where I am today without LMC. The opportunities for development I was given were excellent.
