This course is for students who wish to develop basic carpentry and joinery skills with a view to progression within the construction industry.

Who is this Course for?

This course is designed for 16-18 year old and adult learners, the course will include a substantial amount of careers related learning designed to support progression to the suitable next step, this could include educational trips, employability skills and employer encounters such as guest speakers. For 16-18 year old learners this will be delivered as a study programme which includes math and English where applicable and work experience.

What progression and career opportunities will I gain?

The course can lead on to Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery or a Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship.

What are the entry requirements for the course?

3 GCSEs at grade G/1 or higher PLUS grade F/2 or higher in Maths and English

What does the course involve?

You will study the following subjects:

• Safe working practices

• Communication

• Construction technology

• Woodworking joints

• Maintain and use hand tools

• Prepare and use power tools

All LMC students will receive tutorial support throughout your course.

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional English and Maths qualifications or GCSE mathematics and English if not already awarded a grade C/4 or higher in these subjects. If you have a grade D/3 at GCSE you will study maths and/or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D/3 will work towards GCSE through the study of Maths & English Functional Skills. Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant maths and English qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment.

How will I be Assessed?

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including assignments, practical performance, examination and course work.

What qualification will I get?

On completion of this course you will receive a Level 1 in Carpentry and Joinery and the Basic Skills CSCS card.
