This Gas Engineering Apprenticeship will provide you with the all the skills you require to start a career within the construction industry. Gas engineering involves the safe installation, commission, decommission and the ongoing service and repair of gas appliances in either a domestic or non-domestic setting. Appliances can include, but are not limited to, a range of work categories such as central heating boilers, unvented hot water storage, ducted air heaters, cookers, space heaters, meters, alternative fuel, boosters, testing and purging for industrial pipework.

Roles in gas engineering will include explaining how installations and appliances work, providing energy efficiency advice and ensuring customer service excellence at all times. Gas engineering operates strictly within the requirements of health and safety legislation.
Roles in gas engineering are physical in nature, and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, working at heights and working in confined spaces. All gas engineers must be registered on the Gas Safe® Register for each appliance in which they are competent to undertake work on.
You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week and be prepared to attend College (LMC) through day and block release for your essential off the job training.

While at LMC you will be taught by time served, qualified tutors who have over 30 years industry experience and still work in industry, to ensure you receive the best training. Our workshops are up to date allowing you to become confident and proficient while developing your skills.

Course Overview

The course is delivered over an 18-month period covering the following units.

  • Unit 1: Understand and apply health and safety in gas utilisation

  • Unit 2: M/617/9472 Understanding scientific principles in gas utilisation

  • Unit 3: T/617/9473 Understanding combustion and properties of gas (natural gas and LPG)

  • Unit 4: Understanding buildings, services and structures

  • Unit 5: Understanding gas safety

  • Unit 6: Specific core gas safety

  • Unit 7: Install and maintain domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances

  • Unit 8: Install and maintain domestic gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances

  • Unit 9: Install and maintain domestic gas space heating appliances

  • Unit 10: Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques

You will also focus on your chosen pathway, each pathway is achieved by completing a selection of the units:

  • Pathway 1 (aligned to CCN 1, CENWAT, HTR 1, CKR1, LAU 1, LEI 1, MET 1, CoNGLP1 PD and Unvented Hot Water)

  • Pathway 2 (aligned to CCN 1, CENWAT, MET1, CoNGLP1 PD and Unvented Hot Water).

  • Pathway 3 (aligned to CCN 1, HTR 1, CKR1, LAU 1, LEI 1, MET1 and CoNGLP1 PD)

  • Pathway 4 (aligned to CCN 1, CKR1, LAU 1, LEI 1, MET1, and CoNGLP1 PD)

You will also achieve:

  • Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques

  • Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Water Byelaws in the UK

Assessment Methods

  • There will be regular assessor visits to the workplace to observe your competency to complete certain tasks.

  • At College you will be assessed by on-line multiple-choice test, paper-based exams, written assignments, practical assessments, and on site assessments.

  • To complete the Apprenticeshipyou will be required to pass the End point assessment once you have passed through the gateway.

Progression Routes

On successful completion of your Level 3 Apprenticeship, you will be fully competent to work in the domestic Gas industry

Typical job roles for students completing this qualification are:

  • Gas Fitter

  • Gas Engineer

  • Gas Installer

Progression may be possible in the form of:

  • Level 4/5 HNC/D in Building Services Engineering (mechanical)

  • Level 5 Foundation degree in Building Services Engineering

You will also be qualified for:

  • Registration with Gas Safe® Register for four appliances

  • Membership with the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) professional registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech)

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally have gained a minimum of 3-5 GCSEs (grade A/9-C/4) or equivalent at Level 2 on entry, preferably English, Mathematics and a science or relevant / appropriate experience and all will have achieved that level prior to taking their end-point assessment.

Students that do not have GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher in English and Maths will be required to take an initial assessment to showcase abilities. Students must also be currently working in the gas industry.

It is important to be able to work independently or as part of a team. Often working in a safe, efficient, respectful manner.
