This course aims to provide students with an introduction to animal care which could lead to employment at a junior level or to further courses. It will help students to develop personal and administrative skills needed in this kind of work as well as providing introduction to animal care and underpinning knowledge.

Who is this Course for?

This course is designed for 16-18 year old and adult learners, the course will include a substantial amount of careers related learning designed to support progression to the suitable next step, this could include educational trips, employability skills and employer encounters such as guest speakers. For 16-18 year old learners this will be delivered as a study programme which includes math and English where applicable and work experience.

What progression and career opportunities will I gain?

The course can lead on to employment such as an animal care assistant in pet shops, kennels or grooming parlours or you could continue your study onto the Level 3 in Animal Management.

What are the entry requirements for the course?

3 GCSEs at grade A*/9 - D/3 OR a Level 1 related qualification PLUS grade C/4 or higher in GCSE maths or English.

Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

What does the course involve?

The course is suitable for school leavers and adults with an interest in working with animals.

Examples of units you may study are:

  • Animal feeding and accommodation

  • Animal biology

  • Animal health and welfare

  • British wildlife species, habitat and rehabilitation

  • Understand animal behaviour and handling

  • Working in the Animal Care industry

  • Animal breeds and grooming

  • Health and safety

You will learn through taught classes, practical demonstrations, educational visits and visiting speakers from the industry.

All LMC students will receive tutorial support.

A work placement has to be completed as a mandatory part of the course; the placement should be arranged by the learner themselves and may involve access to animals from the categories of:

  • Large animals

  • Companion animals

  • Rodents

  • Exotics species

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and maths qualifications or GCSE mathematics & English if not already awarded a grade C/4 or higher in these subjects. If you have a grade D/3 at GCSE you will study maths or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D/3 will work towards GCSE through the study of maths & English Functional Skills. Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant maths & English qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment.

All LMC students will receive tutorial support.

How will I be Assessed?

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including projects, assignments and observation of practical work. Some units are assessed by an externally set exam and externally set controlled assessment.

What qualification will I get?

On completion of this course you will receive a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care.
