This course is an introduction to the land based industries with a particular focus on animal care and welfare. It provides an opportunity to investigate job opportunities and to acquire appropriate vocational skills.

Who is this Course for?

This course is designed for 16-18 year old and adult learners, the course will include a substantial amount of careers related learning designed to support progression to the suitable next step, this could include educational trips, employability skills and employer encounters such as guest speakers. For 16-18 year old learners this will be delivered as a study programme which includes math and English where applicable and work experience.

What are the entry requirements for the course?

3 GCSEs at grade G/1 or higher PLUS grade F/2 or higher in Maths and English

Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

What does the course involve?

Units you may study include:

Two Core Units:

• Safe and effective work practices in the land based industries

• Preparing to work in the land-based industries

One Specialist Unit:

• Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals

Four Optional Units:

• Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals

• Introduction to wildlife and conservation

• Assist with the feeding and watering of animals

• Animals in the wild and their main features

All LMC students will receive tutorial support and take a programme of Functional Skills.

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and maths qualifications or GCSE mathematics and English if not already awarded a grade C/4 or higher in these subjects. If you have a grade D/3 at GCSE you will study maths and/or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D/3 will work towards GCSE through the study of maths and English Functional Skills. Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant maths and English qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment. All LMC students will receive tutorial support.

How will I be Assessed?

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including internal assignment tasks, a portfolio and one online multiple choice test. N.B. Assessments are based on the requirements of the awarding body and are subject to change.

What qualification will I get?

On completion of this course you will receive a Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in Land-Based Studies.
