The BTEC Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services course is suitable for enthusiastic individuals who are looking for employment in one of the Uniformed Protective Services. This course can be completed over one or two years; with different sizes of programme available to suit a range of needs.

On the course you will be required to complete theory and practical work which will contribute to your final grade. The course is aimed at people who are looking to gain entry into the services or Uniformed Protective Services based university courses. Throughout your time on the course you will have the opportunity to speak to external speakers from different services. You will also be developing your understanding of service behaviour and requirements alongside working towards fitness requirements.

You will be required to attend College 3 days a week and will be expected to carry out an extensive amount of home study in order to complete assignment work, revise and complete homework tasks. The course is 25% practical and 75% theory and assessment methods include; projects, assignments, case studies, course work, practical performance reviews and exams.

Course Overview

Whilst on the course you will have many opportunities to widen your skills through a variety of course activities. Team activities are a pivotal part of the course, with regular activities being integrated into the course. There will be further opportunity for you to develop these skills, especially during your involvement with the NCS programme at the start of your course; this will give you a great opportunity to bond with your new classmates as well as improving your leadership and teamwork skills.

  • Physical Preparation, Health & Wellbeing

  • Research Skills

  • Professional Development

We also provide trips for learners to further support the theory content in lessons, trips can include: Army Reserves, Border Agency and the Crown Courts.

Students on this course are also eligible to trial for The LMC Football Academy; a full-time football programme available to all students across Sports & Public Services at Lancaster & Morecambe College, delivered by UEFA qualified coaches. The Academy can offer you:

  • Training in football

  • Excellent progression routes, including scholarships to USA & Canada

  • Valuable sport related work experience

  • FA Level coaching qualification

  • European project opportunities, including a football tour to Alicante

  • Strength and conditioning training

  • Completion of your NCS award

  • Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh

Industry Links

You will be required to complete two week work placement whilst studying on the course. This is an opportunity to gain vital employability skills and develop your understanding of some roles within the industry.

Throughout the two years we also provide students with visits from guest speakers; each sharing their own experiences from different services. In the past these have included: Armed Police, Police Dogs, Fire and Rescue Service as well as multiple visits from the military services.

Progression Routes

Learners complete the National Foundation Diploma in Year 1 (equivalent to 1 ½ A-Levels), and if their first year has been successful, move onto the National Extended Diploma in Year 2 (equivalent to 3 A-Levels).

Upon completion of this course progression opportunities include both direct service entry and progression onto university to study a range of courses such as: Professional Policing, Criminology, Social Justice, Law and Politics. This course can also offer progression onto our own HE provision; HNC/D in Public Services.

There are a wide variety of exciting roles within the Uniformed Protective Services, including:

  • Soldier • Security Officer • Search & Rescue Worker • Royal Navy Officer • Prison Instructor • Police Officer • Firefighter • Dog Handler • Bodyguard

Previous students have gone on to work in a variety of Uniformed Protective Services including: Police, Marines, RAF, Navy, Fire & Rescue and the Army.

Entry Requirements

To study this course, you must:

  • Enthusiasm for the subject area

  • Enjoy working with other people

  • Show a commitment to study

  • Be able to work independently

  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills

You must also have 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher, including English and Maths OR a related Level 2 qualification PLUS a grade C/4 or higher in English and Maths.
