This is an intensive one year full time course which aims to increase your knowledge and skills in different aspects of art and design. It is also a pathway to enable you to go on and study art and design at Degree or HND level at leading Universities and Schools of Art and Design throughout the UK.

Who is this Course for?

The foundation course is a fast-paced, intensive, creative arts course. It is designed to help you build the creative and conceptual skill-set necessary for you to identify and develop your specialism. Our students go on to study in a wide range of subjects such as illustration, graphics, fine art, fashion, textiles, photography, jewellery, 3D design and many more. The course helps you build exciting, original portfolios to help you get to the universities of your choice.

Along the way you will learn a whole new range of skills using our modern facilities; including various Mac suites, laser cutters, printmaking facilities, wet darkrooms, photo studios and 3D workshops. You will be taught by practicing artists, who will challenge and support your creativity.

The course is not only a fantastic opportunity for those just out of A level or extended diploma but is also a good way for more mature learners to find their way back into creative careers.

What progression and career opportunities will I gain?

The course is primarily an opportunity to test different Art and Design specialisms before applying for University. We aim to give you as much information about the huge range of art and design courses available nationally at Degree, Foundation Degree or HND.

What are the entry requirements for the course?

A Level Art and/or Design at grade A*-C and a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and maths at grade C/4 or higher OR Art and Design

Extended Diploma Level 3 and GCSE English and maths at grade C/4 or higher.

Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

What does the course involve?

The course aims to provide students with experience in a variety of art and design disciplines. It is an ideal opportunity to explore and experiment within a broad spectrum of Art and Design specialisms before going on to make a university application. It will give you a strong and diverse portfolio that demonstrates a wide range of skills and researching ability. The emphasis of the course is on experimentation and challenging preconceptions.

During the first term students are introduced to a range of different practical areas whilst also developing core areas such as drawing and researching skills. In the second term students are asked to choose a specialist area and are then based in this area for the rest of the course. Historical, critical and contemporary theory is integrated into the studio programme.

The course provides students with the opportunity to experience the full range of art and design including:

• Three Dimensional Design

• Graphics

• Photography – both 35mm and digital

• Illustration

• Digital Imagery

• Video

• Surface pattern

All LMC students will receive tutorial support and extensive advice and guidance about the UCAS process and progress opportunities.

How will I be Assessed?

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including coursework, projects and assignments, though primarily through portfolio presentation.

What qualification will I get?

On completion of this course you will receive Level 3/4 University of the Arts Diploma in Art & Design Foundation Studies.
