This exciting and practical course is designed to develop the professional food and beverage service skills needed to succeed in the hospitality, travel, and tourism industries.

You will gain hands-on experience in a variety of realistic working environments, building the confidence, knowledge, and workplace behaviours that employers are looking for. Alongside practical training, you will learn about the legislation, regulations, and industry standards that help businesses operate safely and successfully.

The hospitality sector offers a wide range of career opportunities, from restaurants, cafés, and bars to hotels, cruise ships, airports, holiday resorts, visitor attractions, and events. The customer service, communication, and teamwork skills you develop on this course are highly transferable and valued across both the hospitality and travel and tourism industries.

Upon successful completion, you will achieve industry-recognised qualifications that can support progression into further study, apprenticeships, or employment. The course is delivered over three days per week, with some evening sessions included to give you experience of the working patterns commonly found within the industry and to help prepare you for future employment.

You will gain valuable hands-on experience by helping to run The Bay Restaurant, the College’s commercial training restaurant, serving real customers in a realistic working environment. This will allow you to build confidence, develop industry-standard skills, and experience the fast-paced nature of hospitality.

Assessment is carried out through practical observation of your skills in a working environment, alongside the completion of a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your knowledge, understanding, and professional development throughout the course. There are no formal exams, with the focus placed on developing and showcasing your practical skills, creativity, and workplace readiness.

Industry Links

Placement opportunities include working locally within a range of different settings as well as the potential for European placements through college based educational visits .
Working alongside lead professionals/employers within the industry will help support your development of a set of transferable skills.
You may also be offered the opportunity to volunteer for charity based functions, working on external front of house events.

Progression Routes

On successful completion of this course, you may progress to:

  • A higher-level Hospitality and Catering qualification

  • An Apprenticeship within the hospitality, leisure, travel, or tourism sectors

  • Another full-time college course to further develop your skills and knowledge

  • Employment within the hospitality industry

Entry Requirements

To apply for this course you must:

  • Be working at a minimum of Entry Level 2 or above within maths and English.

  • Have a commitment to study (attendance, punctuality & behaviour)

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have a proven interest in vocational area

  • Enjoy working with people and have good communication skills

  • Have the desire to want to learn and wear the designated uniform with pride.

  • Be willing to undertake a wide range of practical activities both inside and outside of college

Also a commitment to wanting to improve maths, English and communication skills will be helpful.
