Our department offers an introduction to the animal care industry and the types of careers available. The courses we offer will provide you with the knowledge required to work with animals, allow progression and the chance to enhance the skills required for FE, HE and employment. All courses include work related experience to enhance your employability skills; the College also provides a range of animal based facilities that you can access during your course. These include a dedicated mammal workshop, exotic animal workshop/classroom, science laboratory, aquatics facilities and newly developed grooming parlour and outdoor area.

Students have gone on to Lincoln University, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Cumbria, University of Stirling and Myerscough College. Subjects studied include Animal Conservation Science, Veterinary Science, Veterinary Nursing, Animal Welfare and Behaviour, Zoology, Animal Biology and Equine Science. Students have gone on to work as veterinary nurses, zoologists, wildlife rangers, dog groomers, wildlife biologists, pet shop assistants, stable hands, dog handlers. kennel managers and zookeepers. Employers include Wainwright’s Shelter, Vale of Lune Kennels, Little Beasties Pet Shop and South Lakes Wild Animal Park.

What do I need to join?

3 GCSEs at grade G/1 or higher PLUS grade F/2 or higher in Maths and English
Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

General Information

This course is an introduction to animal care in the land based industries and provides an opportunity to investigate job opportunities and to acquire appropriate vocational skills.

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for school leavers and adults who wish to develop personal skills and qualities required for work in the land based industry, particularly animal care.
