Lancaster & Morecambe College recently invited Year 9 pupils from local schools onto campus, to delve into the worlds of tourism, culture and the creative arts, during an engaging event that showcased the diverse career opportunities available across the sectors.
Over 70 pupils from Central Lancaster High, Morecambe Bay Academy, Bay Leadership Academy, Garstang Community Academy and Our Lady's Catholic College attended a series of themed workshops on campus, gaining valuable insights into the diverse range of roles available in the sector. They had the opportunity to plan the opening event for Eden Project North, created their own 3-D artworks in the College's 360 Virtual Reality suite, and met the marketing and events team from the prestigious Gilpin Hotel & Lake House in Windermere.
In the afternoon, the schools had the chance to visit local businesses including The Grand Theatre, The Dukes, Leighton Hall, Greenlands Farm Village and The Flowerbowl. Each employer provided a guided tour of their premises and shared information about the different career opportunities within their organisation and more widely across the sector.
Leading on the development of careers provision at the College is Victoria Carter, Careers Lead and Head of Engagement.
We know how important it is for young people to meet with local and regional employers and to fully understand all of the opportunities available to them. In collaboration with Lancashire Careers Hub, we curated an event which has given over 70 local pupils the chance to gain valuable insights and explore potential career paths within the tourism, culture, and place sectors.
In the last 12 months LMC have been recognised nationally as Careers Champions by the Careers and Enterprise Company and were presented with a Careers Excellence Award at the House of Lords in March 2024, for their contribution to Building Future Skills.
