Job Description

Lecturer in Engineering
£24,350 - £32,563 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience plus £6,000 per annum Shortage Skills’ Allowance
37 hours per week

Are you an experienced industry professional looking for a new challenge and career change? Have you considered teaching, and passing on your skills to the next generation? Would you like to help bring the latest approaches into the classroom and serve your profession through education?  We have a vacancy in the Engineering section of our Construction & Engineering team working in our state of-the-art Construction Centre at Lancaster & Morecambe College and welcome applications from both experienced teachers/lecturers in Engineering, and industry professionals wishing to transition into teaching. Candidates must have the qualifications and competencies required to teach Levels 2 and 3 Engineering qualifications confidently.  

Applications are welcomed from qualified industry professionals with up to date experience in the engineering trade or industry who do not yet hold a teaching qualification. We would expect you to have a keen interest in the development of young people entering the profession and be able to demonstrate strong communication skills and teaching potential.   

This is a unique opportunity for you to transition to a dual professional teaching role at the College.  We will support your comprehensive on-the-job training programme, including initial teacher training qualification; individual support and mentoring; and, if required, a reduced teaching workload in the first year.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose:

  • To provide high quality teaching and learning, specifically contributing to the programme area’s expertise in Mechanical/Maintenance Engineering and Electrical Engineering.  To work collaboratively with the department to develop the engineering provision at Levels 2, 3 and 4.  
  • To support students in reaching their academic and personal goals leading to their positive progression.  

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

  1. A teaching commitment in line with College policy as agreed annually with the Director of Curriculum & Innovation.  You will plan and deliver teaching/learning programme using a flexible range of engaging strategies to promote learning, taking responsibility for the continual development of own teaching and related curriculum.
  2. Develop learning resources/materials to meet individual learner needs, promote independent learning skills, devise appropriate assignments, tutorials and learning programmes and maintain records that support the learning experience.
  3. Work within an agreed curriculum framework and to agreed targets/objectives, and contribute to curriculum development activities.
  4. Assess student competence in College or in the workplace, including Internal Verification.                                                                                      
  5. Undertake administrative tasks and complete returns as required by the Programme Area Manager.
  6. Act as a course manager and/or course tutor as appropriate, supporting the successful implementation of study programmes and work experience placements.
  7. Assist with recruitment, selection and enrolment, providing high quality information, advice and guidance to students.
  8. Promote and support the positive behaviour of students.
  9. Accompany and supervise students on educational and training visits if required.
  10. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post as required.

Skills & Experience Required

Experience 

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Relevant teaching or training experience
  • Industrial experience in a relevant vocational area
  • Experience of training young people

Desirable - Measured by application form and interview

  • Experience of compiling submissions to awarding bodies
  • Experience of delivering Engineering programmes in Further Education
  • Providing effective career advice and guidance

Qualifications

Essential - Measured by application form, interview and assessment*

  • Level 4 qualification in Mechanical Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering
  • Either teacher-qualified (Cert Ed/PGCE) or academic aptitude to undertake a L3 qualification in Education & Training (evening class over 30 weeks)
  • GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2)*
  • Level 3 Award in Assessing or Level 3 Certificate in Assessing (or within specified timescale)

* You will be required to undertake a Literacy and/or Numeracy assessment at, or immediately after interview, if you do not have these qualifications or cannot provide the relevant certificates 

Desirable - Measured by application form

  • Degree or vocational qualifications in appropriate subject area
  • Basic Skills qualification
  • Level 4 Training Assessment and Quality Assurance Award or equivalent

Skills / Abilities

  • Awareness of modern approaches to the delivery of all programmes
  • Able to develop Engineering programmes for main provision and full cost courses. 
  • Competent in the safe use of Engineering Machinery
  • Up to date health & safety competence and practice
  • Good standard of computer literacy
  • The ability for sustained hard work
  • The ability to work within a team and as a course manager
  • Ability to network and make links within the community, including employers

  • Understanding of Functional Skills
  • Understanding of requirement of apprenticeship frameworks
